The Hotel is the Hotel Alpina in case you can't see it properly, most cheap, excellent food and drink.

We went in September and it was roasting hot. bit of rain going up Stelvio but 30 degrees when we got to Austria!

EDIT - also a veggie and i think i had a potato/cheese rostie thing at the hotel, lovely. Was about half the price of other places and a lot less than we thought it would be so we ate/drank a lot!

We definitely don't have limitless amounts of cash so it's cheap and cheerful all the way for us
Well, camping is probably the way forward for you then! Our campsite was excellent, cannot fault it! Not many pitches for tents as they have a lot of statics there, but all of the people were very friendly and polite. It was also cheap. 7 nights at the end of Aug/beg of Sept was £125.

I couldn't comment on any other campsites as we only stayed there, but we were thinking of going onto Italy, but decided we liked the campsite so much that we stayed there the whole time.

Clare, you haven't seen me go camping, I take EVERYTHING! I feel that hotels are the way forward for us (me!) as our car isn't big enough to carry all my camping necessities, all my luggage and David Lock

We take everything except the kitchen sink, Hollie is usually squashed into the back seat with her head leaning on a cool box or something!

Well this is the view from the top of Stelvio looking down. You can see the road snakign on the hill

Watch out for lorries and coaches. TG either had it closed or were very very very lucky with traffic.

Top of Stelvio with the tibetian restaurant in the distance!

And Grindlewald Pass again. Again, see the road twisting in the distance.

Did an Alpine tour a couple of years back. Through France/Germany for a few days in Austria, A week in the Italian Lakes and a few days in Geneva then home.

Covered the Stelvio, St Bernadino, SplugenPass, St Gotthard, Furka, Grimsel and Jaunpass.

Dont expect deserted roads and kissing apexes (a la Top Gear) but we found enough room to have some fun without going mad.

Scoob on The Stelvio (In September)

The SplugenPass

The St Gotthard

The Grimsel pass from the Furka.

GPS Tracks and Google earth is fun (in a geeky way )

Those passes look awesome, this is going to be a great trip

I'd really like to get hold of some decent maps, does anyone know if there is the equivalent of the Philips Navigator Britain series (1.5 miles to 1 inch) available for France/Italy/Switzerland? I've got their France/Belgium/Luxembourg but the scale just isn't as good. I like to have very detailed maps to use alongside Tom Tom.

Am I the only person who gets nervous just looking at the pictures?

Would love to do something like this. After having problems driving in Lynton and Lynmouth in Devon my dream of storming round mountain roads is never going to happen

Enjoy though

done many a trip to the south of france, monaco, italy and switzerland in the last few years with a few mates in an elise and tvr.

sadly we have never made it to stelvio or any other pass at that time but defintely next year we are there.

did a swiss pass in october last year and that was snowing up the top.

with regards to accommadation its best to book it for nice, cannes and st. tropez etc. most other places you can just turn up at and get a nice place.

i will put some pics up later as well.

and i will be watching this thread a lot to get some ideas for next year

The roads are quite high, but there are thick stone walls between you and the vertical drop!

Driving in Corsica was interesting and quite dangerous with regard to drops....

What happened in Lynmouth?

Ah, may have to have a rethink then

I dont know the Philips Navigator series but as we were doing the odd walk I looked for 1:25K explorer equivalents

France is very well served by IGN - but expensive for any great area.

But The ones I got for Austria and Italy were no-where near the quality. I forget the names but will fish them out tonight.
