Crushing them is a waste, they should be sold at auction and the proceeds go into a fund to pay for the damage caused by uninsured drivers.

I'm working on a web content project for one of the big insurers at the moment. Some stats you might find interesting I unearthed a couple of weeks ago:
DfT reckons there are a minimum of 700,000 untaxed & uninsured cars on the road and Motor Insurers Bureau reckons 1 in 20 cars is uninsured. But no-one knows accurately. An average of £30 of our annual premium goes towards settling accident claims caused by uninsured drivers.
It really needs addressing because we're all paying for it.

It is ridiculous to crush serviceable vehicles, however most of these will be snotters that need getting of the road, there needs to be some common sense applied, crush the H reg Cavaliers, sell the uninsured 2001 BMW and put it into the uninsured drives fund, get the old crap off the road, recycle the decent stuff.
How does it work if say its someone who has simply not been insured due to a clerical error, or say forgot to re-instate a direct debit been away for a while and had it cancelled, or simply missed the renewal date say due to personal problems, illness or bereavement ?
There is a world of difference between a chav knowlingly not insuring and someone genuinely not being aware that they arent ?

A very old friend of mine died last year, and had forgot to pay her life insurance monthly fee, 2 days before she died
Her 16 year old and 12 month old daughter lost out on a £150,000 payout, because the insurers said because she missed her payment her cover was null and void

Simple, they are uninsured regardless of how it came about

As J4CKO said, I wonder what the breakdown is. I could admit to driving uninsured in my life as once or twice I drove my mate's car home from the pub when they were too p!ssed. Or I tried out a car I was thinking of buying privately, but didn't have a current car so wouldn't have had TP insurance. Or drove one to the MoT centre after the old cert had expired. I wonder if those are 10% or 90% of the above cases.
Other thing is, it says how many were convicted, but doesn't say what sentence they got. That would be really interesting.
