LOL Not sure mate, but I'd be interested in finding out. When I was specifying my classic for 320bhp, and asked whether it was necessary/beneficial to change the OEM recirculating valve they all said a resounding 'no'. In fact, some argued that it would be a step backwards! The people I've spoken to who've gone back to recirculating said that the only "benefit" was the noise, and ironically, that was the reason many of them changed back - they got tired of it!!

The trouble with a second hand engine is you will have no idea of the history of it and what condition it is in. You could go to all that trouble and be right back where you started from. Unless you're a dab hand at swapping engines around it's also likely you'll have to pay someone to do it. What started off as a cheap fix can soon turn into an expensive nightmare. And of course you'll have no warranty if things do go wrong. I certainly wouldn't put a s/h engine in.
In the end I bought an Sti ra v-limited engine with 39k miles on it from Grade A which cost me just over £1k. If it goes bang,i'll buy another one for £1k and if that goes bang i'll buy another one and even by then I will only have spent what the rebuild would have cost in the first place !
My original engine was rebuilt by Api for the previous owner at a cost of over £3k and that didn't last 12k miles even.
It's all down to how much money you have and whether you want to be doing all the work yourself.

I had to make the decision between a rebuild at around £3k or a s/h engine at around £1k.

Bit of friendly advice mate as I was caught out a few years back in a similar situation.
Ask him what the worst case scenario is and how much that will cost then budget for that. Otherwise that £1500+Vat could end up being £2500+Vat. I know because it happened to me,it wasn't the mechanics fault,it was mine for not questioning them about what else could be wrong.
I described the fault I had and they quoted to repair it,when it was stripped it was more serious and cost me ALOT more !

from having a discussion with jase myself about rebuilds, pretty much everything is covered in the price. obviously gonna be specific to whats needs fixing/replacing etc, but around £2k inc vat is his going rate. has a very reputable source that rebuilds the engines for him and the customer.
i wouldnt use him if he was crapp

IIRC Zen do a rebuild using forged parts for around £2500 so that's worth considering aswell, had their prices here somewhere but can't find them !

Oi! Who marked my comment as negative and what for?
We should start a thread/poll to say "My VTA dump valve blew up my engine" to see how many people have suffered from such an affliction LMFAO. I'm sure I will be proved right.
Unless it is a very highly tuned engine I really can't see the DV causing an engine to blow. Admit it, you just wanted to have a free pop at VTA dump valves at the expense of this thread. I wouldn't have one on my car now but I don't bang on about them at every opportunity.

Joe, this is what your engine looks like at the moment, it must have gone in quite a good way
I cant see that a dump valve would casue this, but i am waiting for the barrage of comments proving me wrong that will follow i'm sure.
There was a little bit of work but my engine has dropped in and seems to be ok.
