Drink Driving ....

I think RB5 245 hit the nail on the head, punishments have to be inline with the seriousness of the crime, the real problem is punishments are too leanient in this country for SERIOUS crimes not visa-versa! Law obiding citizens may slip up once in a while, 36 in a 30, parking fines etc. etc. but its the people who go out, have 20 pints and crash into someones house then get a years ban and community service that you should be looking at! Its a BLATENT dissregard for anyone else and they could have quite easilly killed someone, but a years ban and some road sweeping think that will stop them? Hell I doubt it, if they were stupid enough to do it in the first place they'll no doubt do it again! Stick them in a proper prison, no f**king TV, ****, nice food, just bread and rice and make them sew footballs or something equally as droll!

Although the law hasn't changed much if at all in the last 30 years, social attitudes have enormously. When I was 15 it was still borderline cool for people to have a few and drive home. Nowadays you might as well admit you enjoy child ****. Not sure what's changed it, possibly all the public service ads before Christmas. Enforcement is also rigorous - although UK has one of the highest blood alcohol tolerances in Europe, it also gives instant one-year/18 mth bans to pretty much everyone caught - other countries have BACs of 0.2 or 0.5 but the punishment can be much more like a slap on the wrist, so it isn't really dealt with. UK has a considerably better record than many on this issue. This is what the Zero-Tolerance is above, it's ZT and a long ban for anyone who drives over 0.8, it doesn't mean they drop the limit to 0.0.
I think the messages about don't drink and drive have had a massive effect on Friday nights (though there seems to be a slackening of this) - messages about sunny Sunday lunches and morning after benders would be very useful.
EDIT - civil liberties argument is 100% bollox. You have a driving LICENCE, not a RIGHT. Break the rules and it will get taken away. This also applies to people speeding, whatever SN/ABD/safespeed think about it! YOU DON'T HAVE A RIGHT TO DRIVE.

Statistically speaking, drivers are at more risk of being involved in a crash while using their mobiles and/or IPods. A recent study here in Australia produced worrying results. 75% of young drivers, that's those below 30, admitted they send text messages on their mobiles and play with IPods while driving. One "woman" was questioned on TV, she openly admitted to using mobiles and IPods...admitting it was dangerous...along with a the typical silly girlie laugh.

I know damn well 90% of you are hypocrites and have on at LEAST 1 occasion driven over the limit. I bet even those banging on about tougher this and that have done it.
Sometimes the people getting caught and banned are just unlucky, the vast majority here are just lucky it wasn't their turn.

Looks like he has run away hurt from the question I asked him!
