The differences are poles apart; primarily that the UK is governed by a political party, whereby the Sudan (for example) is governed by a religeous party.

Therefore we (in the UK) have many sub-cultures with neither one nor the other being dominant, so there's competition internally between these various religeous cultures, all of which are vying for the top slot and support/recognition from the left (or right wing) government.

So its not that simple as to expect everyone that comes to the UK to respect our cultures, due to the imbalance caused between politics and religion as the two are at opporsite ends of a sliding scale.

There is no answer, as the various religeous groups feel no loyality to the UK or our political parties, only their own inward facing groups. So how can we ever expect people to respect our cultures when they aren't ours anyway and they/we have no respect for eachother.

The hard fact is that the UK is now multicultural and has long lost its identity the way holland did in the late seventies, its time to forget about being 'British' and 'ruling the waves' as that concept died around seven years ago!

Errr, when was shot ever mentioned, I believe it was jailed for up to 6 months or 4 lashes, no death penalty.

I'm not condoning the Sudanese government, Islam or the penalty, but to expect a Brit to not have to follow their customs when we complain of foreigners not doing so here seems hypocritical to me. She chose to go there and break their customs, take it on the chin I say.

ETA: Ahh, I see, it was protestors saying she should be shot, not the government or courts, bit like the Muslim's in London saying behead the cartoonists then.

That's your opinion. The Muslim's get pissed if you make images / idols in the name of their prophet, I'd have thought all the hoo-har in London over the cartoons should tell you that, doing it in a Islamic state is tantamount to pissing on the Queen.

SUDAN was facing international sanctions last night after hacking off the little paws of a three year-old teddy bear.

The cuddly toy was found guilty of blasphemy after taking the name of the prophet Muhammad, in defiance of the country's strict Islamic teddy-bear naming laws.

A spokesman for the Sudanese ministry of justice defended the sentence, adding: "This is an act of mercy.

"Our laws demand that blashpeming toys be stripped to their underwear and stoned to death before their bodies are thrown into the desert as an afternoon snack for the vultures.

"By removing only the paws of this infidel we are demonstrating great restraint. This is a gesture of goodwill to you Western devils and your pornographic governments."


He added: "How would you react if your child named a teddy bear after Jesus, John the Baptist or even Tom Hanks?

"Would you not decapitate the toy, thrash the child and throw the teacher off a cliff to be devoured by ravenous killer whales?"

The United Nations and Amnesty International have called for the release of more than 2500 cuddly toys imprisoned without trial since early September.

A UN spokesman added: "Of course, some may argue there is no point in us keeping all these Sudanese children alive if they can't even think of a legal name for a teddy bear."

The bear was named following a classroom vote, with 'Muhammad' chosen ahead of 'Paddington', 'Baloo' and 'Al-Hassan, the Terrible Golden Sword of Righteousness'.
