I think Clarkson is wanting the "Jonothan Ross" style contract. I mean he knows he is a position where ITV/Sky would snap him up without question - I think he is calling the BBCs bluff. There are few presenters that can command multi million viewing audiences regardless of programme, but Clarkson is undoubatly one of them.
Regardless, my source say that as it stands, this is his last series of Top Gear. Hopefully they are dead wrong.

Pontificating
For a start it's BBC2, one less decimal point for the money men to worry about, no matter how popular it is it's BBC2 it wont pay as much as if it was on BBC1 at 20.00 on a Tues or Thurs for example.

Sure he gets money from his DVDs etc. as much as TV contracts.

I hope Clarkson does more war / engineering / Britain history documentries, his narrative style would pull a greater audience than the usual historydoc viewers, which is never a bad thing.

Ive read that this rumour originally started because some thing JC said taking the p*ss out of May having to leave early to go to a Doctors appointment.
I dont know exactly what was said but some one has taken it the wrong way.

All three of them are good presenters in their own right. When they are lumped together trying to appeal to the younger and more rebellious types, they lose it somehow and it descends into some kind of a predictable pantomime farce. Anyone can appear to raise a reaction when they say the sort of things which are against authority but eventually it becomes boring and ineffectual.
The show is desperately short of truly original material and it seems to have reached the end of its natural life.
Time it either had the skids under it or that there is a big change in its style.
