xbox360 or ps3

360 is only about £50 cheaper (for the intermediate 360 over the 40Gb PS3), that's not that much of a saving. In fact, online gaming is free on the PS3, you have to pay an additional subscription with Xbox so once you add that (approx £30 for 12 months (RRP)), the price gap is getting smaller!

Played Halo 3 on my nephews 360 last night and it looked rubbish.
Very surprised considering its one of the top games. Compared to COD4 or even Team Fortress on PC it looked very dated.

Am teetering on the edge with Mass Effect, I really fancy it, but I just get the impression that it's KoTOR without the lightsabres.

Of course not - although it helps . Team Fortress 2 looks like a cartoon but its miles better than what I played last night. I've played nearly 30 hours of TF2, theres no way I'd spend the same amount of time on Halo3.
It just surprised me that such a hyped game looked so bad. Haven't seen COD4 on 360 but I it looks fantastic on my PC. Looked better than Crysis IMO.
Plus how the heck anyone can feel comfortable playing an FPS with a pad is beyond me. Just not the same.

360. My mate has both and hates the PS3 with a passion.
Remember pre-launch when Sony were going on about 1080p being real HD and making a big fuss that the PS3 would support 1080p and the 360 wouldn't? It was one of their big selling points.
Well, the 360 does support 1080p thanks to an update and when you look at the games, most of the recent 360 releases also support 1080p. Now look at all the PS3 games, they DON'T support 1080p.
Plus, there's no decent games yet for the PS3 and what decent games there are, are available on the 360 and play and, arguably, look better (often subjective this one)
It would take more than Bluray to sway me to get a PS3.

Probably bit out of the comfort zone of the average PC gamer

I can see where you're coming from but to say it looked rubbish is a bit harsh imo.
COD4 on the 360 is highly impressive and is a lot more fun then Halo 3 as there is a lot more variation in gameplay (about 15 game types)

i do like the way everyone comes up with the tech specs of whether a game/machine is running 1080p or i.
Just enjoy the games, i'm still playing on an 32" widescreen tv, yes some of the stuff is blurry, but i still have a blast and it doesn't take anything away from whatever i'm playing (i will admit to wanting a nice lcd though )

TBH I did like the look of Gears when it came out, I want a 360 but for driving type games. I only bought a PS2 for Wipeout, Colin and GT.
Can I stream video from PC to 360 over wireless network in the home? And before you ask yes I mean to watch prawn in bed after playing Forza 2

The games I've played so far on the PS3 have all been 720p and I don't think there's anything wrong with it - GT5 in 1080p looks amazing though and Polyphony have said that 1080p is a crucial aspect of the development.

I went out and got a 360 Elite just this weekend gone (first console since PS2, normally been a PC games person). The best deal I found was at GAME (on line or in store).
Got the Elite console with Assassins Creed (also have another bundle with one of the football games instead, if thats your thing), Forza 2, Viva Pinata and extra wireless controller for £329.
Most places seem to be doing just the console for £299. Gamestation are also doing a couple of bundles but the only one that came close to the GAME bundle was for £319 and only comes with one game. So by the time you got the extra games and the extra controller you would be looking at well over £329.
A friend of mine had PS3 but didn't rate it at all so ended up returning it and getting another 360, which he had before the PS3.
I was quite surprised with the 360 if i'm honest, I have been use to PC graphics etc but the graphics on the 360 are equally as good, if not better in some games. Assassins Creed and Forza 2 are very good, as is the graphics in COD4 & Need For Speed Pro Street (only played the demo's from x-box live so far but will be buying them ).
The Elite is quieter than my mates older (white) 360, so he tells me.
Oh and don’t be put off by Halo3, I was playing that in a store when looking at the 360's and thought it was rather crap and didn't know what all the fuss was about, but there are some very good games out there so go and get a 360, you will not regret it

Having now had both i have to say i really do like the ps3 the controler is great it gets you more in to the game with its movement sensers.
The 360 is just as good but without the controller movment and has more games out at the moment but if your a heavy player then they dont last and they do make a lot of noise.

I got an X360 Elite this weekend with Halo 3 and Assassins Creed. I've only played the former so far, and I know it's far from an example of what the 360 can do, technically, it's still a great game in terms of the gameplay.
IMO the only valid criticism that can be made of Halo 3 is the fact that it doesn't do anything significantly new compared to the second one, but then if it aint broke, don't fix it!
As for the 360. I gave my Elite (with the Flacon chipset) quite a hard first session and it remained cool and ran faultlessly. The disc drive is quite noiy, but certainly nothing you can't live with!
I'm really looking forward to the next gen Splinter cell games!!
I'd go with a 360 for now, but get one with a Falcon chipset; I know of a few with these now and non have thrown up the red ring of death.....yet!! Fingers crossed, touchwood etc...!
