How much power to really feel fast?
#32
"Feel Fast" is due to torque and how laggy the car is too. A car with 500 hp but very linaer power will still not feel as quick as a car that has a very sudden spike in torque(hp)

Aye. Nothing....Nothing....whoosh, Oh my god, change gear/lift off throttle and repeat
Holds good novelty value for the unintuitive

I remember back in '98 when I took a test drive (by myself without mates or salesman) in a standard UK Impreza Turbo I thought it was unbelievably fast. At the time I was driving an Impreza Sport and I remember thinking why would anyone want more performance that this... Such naivety!
But I think is mainly down to what we are used to; these days I have some friends with real rocket sled motors (Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Audi RS4, Merc V8, various Porsches), but *none* of them have that impact, either as passenger or driver, to that test drive I had.

The use to bit is the all important factor, go on a nice long holiday forget you even have your scooby be it standard/modded then when you come home its like omg did someone secretly fit a hybrid turbo and remap it . It just the same if your a summer only bike rider 6 months of storage then the first ride back is always awesome.

It does suck, doesnt it..spend all that money on tuning cars and after a month driving you are already thinking its not fast enough
I've got a better solution - why not buy yourself a lada to drive around for a week, and then you get into any european car and you will get that "blown away" effect . Much cheaper and much more practical than running around in a 500hp road car that requires so much money in everyday costs..
Thats the curse of the human nature - we get used to everything and keep wanting more and more even when all the others around us thinking we've got it all. And such is the greedy nature of our society, as we keep wanting more and more, we keep working more and buying more and spending more, and everyone is happy as long as they keep getting more money and buying more things and showing each other who's better, smarter, stronger - but do we get any happier or feel anymore fullfilled ?.. nvm that one got away from me

My 350bhp Spec C feels pretty quick each time I drive it, but then I do spend most of my days smoking around in a ZX1.9D (auto )
Based on past experience it's all about perception of speed.
My previous E39 M5 was rocket-ship quick (especially above 80, where power really shows) but didn't feel as fast as the subaru due to it's linear delivery and massive refinement.
If you want something that feels seriously fast, you want whats under the cover
Take a 4.2 straight six with open trumpet triple carbs and a barely silenced side exit exhaust and put it in a sub 1tonne roofless, aeroscreened sports car. Remove all driver and safety aids and feed all the power to the 205 section rear tyres. If you can find the traction this thing takes off like you've hooked onto the back of an F16
Slower than the Spec C but feels like it's from another world.
Numbers mean nothing, speed is all about perception

I'd rather have what is next to what's under the cover It might not feel fast but it's still one of the best cars I've driven.
The fastest a car has ever felt to me was when I was actually still Saxo Boy. I was driving my VTS at the time and aspired to Impreza ownership. I got talking to Andy F on the Scottish forum and he agreed to take me for a spin in his white STI RA when it had around 350bhp. The week after I was in it she ran an 11.8 1/4er mile so it certainly was quick, but OMG!!! I was simply blown away by how fast this thing accelerated and how much it pinned me in my seat.
Years later I was in sg72s 405bhp STI 5 Type-r which was probably as quick or quicker than the old RA but it never felt the same as I was much more used to quick cars by that point. Nowadays 350-400bhp scoobys are almost water of a ducks back
P.S. Thanks Andy

I have made pax sick (not the best), cry their eyes out, scream very loudly and physically shake for about 20 mins.
R500 can be had for 20k now, SLR for £17k.

Do it, your life will never be the same again! Deserted B road, 400bhp/ton, sticky rubber and a full roll cage just for added ***** into those fast corners..

Totally agree but do you need a Catherham???
What about an MK Indy (been thinking of one of these myself)
2.0 Zetec or 2.0 Vauxhall tuned to 200bhp in a car that is under 500kg, loads of these from 5-7k

This has been bugging me for years, and I've never been able to find an answer.
Say you are used to a standard classic Scoob level of power. How much power/illusion of power with torque would be needed to feel breath takingly quick - like the first time you drove anything with a real kick.
Some might laugh at this, but at 18 I went from a 1L Micra to a Metro Turbo and it felt monstrously fast, like it ran away with you when you when you went to full throttle. Now I know every car since would run rings around it, but I've grown accustomed to the extra power.
How much power would be needed when used to 200bhp, to feel like there was enough power to run away with you, or do you reprogram your brain with perfomance cars, so it would never happen? Maybe because I did it in stages, I've never driven anything and thought 'Oh my god' (like I did driving the Metro - horrible, horrible car BTW). Only 'that's got a bit of a kick'.(that includes driving my mates 350bhp Scoob, which did feel rather good). Oh, and I'm talking about realistic speeds under a ton, second gear power etc.

here goes - IMHO it depends. Really i think it is down toi the BHP per ton more than just how much power and having had several AH sprites with the 1275 BMC engine in various states of tune. Due to many factors with a old/classic car these cars felt fast even when not travelling particularly quickly, cornering acceleration, etc - all felt faster that they really where, they where great fun to drive, very involving.
I have driven several cars with 600+ BHP and many more with 400-500 and they all felt fast, even brutal.
I have had a ride on a few 600 cc quad bikes that would pput all but the most powerful cars to shame - up to a ton anyway. same goes for bikes except they can usually muster a bit more that 100mph.
With the scoob i found at first it felt real quick but i got used to it, i never really ragged it everywhere so when i di put my foot down i usually always got a buzz from it.

My scooby now has 257bhp per tonne on a VF35 with 316ft lbs (can't be bothrered to work out the torque to weight ratio) nice low boost threshold, but there are still moments when I think, 'more would be nice'
I do remember a trip around the M25 the other week, a steady 70, went for an overtaking move in 5th, put my foot down, completed the move..... glanced down at the speedo. Eeek. Yep, it's a quick car!!
You certainly don't need any more than a std Uk turbo's performance on the road if I'm being honest though!

Part of the reason VAG cars with the 2.0TFSI engine are so tractable compared to an all or nothing old skool turbo car like an Impreza.

We're not talking about track times here, its about how much feels fast, I'm telling you now a 600cc sports bike will out accelerate most cars apart from your top 'Hyper Cars' and something like a current litre bike would embarrass everything up to 150mph
