just wish santa would lend me some sterling so i could have your power fc off you. would love that in the scoob, but unfortunatley the credit card is gonna take a battering for the gearbox.

Yeah I thought the car was going to be off the road longer as I thought my problem was the gear box. But it turned out to be the diff and was £150 as opposed to £1500+

It would mean I'd have had to save up for the motec i want and leave the car off the road for a while. I'm not fussed if it goes or stays at the moment.

Got to agree with forking out on the gearbox mate, I was fed up with smashing them, so bit the bullet and had a 5 speed PPG put in mine.

I broke my last box properly, stripped 2nd gear with only 330/290

Alyn from AS Perfomance picked my car up from my house the Saturday before Scooby Shootout, I picked it back up the Thursday before the Scooby Shootout, and kicked it's **** in on the drag strip. Still going strong.

I didn't pay anywhere near your quote from API, and mine was a rush job. IIRC 1999 rebulit UK box, my jap diffs, new clutch, £'s well thats between me and Alyn.

At least you were able to drive yours home rattling, mine lasted a 100 yards at 1bar of boost and whats that noise.

The price quoted to Choc. is for a freshly built, recon box for that car. It will have a 6 months / 6000 miles whichever sooner warranty. That's the value deal, as we are unsure of what is broken on his box and pricing it by individual part replacement means that the price could soon go through the roof.

Clutch prices were quoted on a worst-case-deal as, at 70,000 odd miles since the engine was last out, there is a good chance that the clutch is worn to the point that it won't last much longer. As I pointed out, it is in there now and working and may be on its last legs or it may not , no one knows, BUT as soon as we expose it, we'll all know how much life it has left.

If it doesn't look like at least a years worth then it'll make sense to be done now, just to save the hassle and labour cost next time.

I know it is a cost that probably doesn't want thinking about - but there is no sense in trying to pretend that the clutch is like new when it clearly isn't. Choc. can rely upon our integrity: if it doesn't need a clutch, we won't sell him one.

May end up getting on in the future so i like to play my cards close.

Sorry l don't follow this. Are you asking for a quote to supply and build a PPG set up? For what year/ model car ? Straight cut / helical cut synchro or dog engagement ? With or without Dccd? What ratio for the final drive?

Answer that lot and l'll get on it.

love it david.

anywho again thanks for the chat we just had. its nice to know that even though we discussed in great detail about what to do, there was no pressure from your side or any obligation.
even if someone else does do the gearbox work, i think pat hepburn may be getting my business re. a remap eventually.

again thank you very much david for all the advice... a genuine genuine guy

Chin up Andy, these things always happen when you leat need/want them to. At least it's not your engine! David will look after you and the car will be back to normal before you know it!

car may be going elsewhere yet, still adding up my options, although i think after a chat earlier, davids persuaded me to get it remapped there by pat

thats the thing i really appreciated. even when i mentioned to him on the phone i may take the car elsewhere for convenience/cost etc (as money is tight), he was still a gentleman and offered advice tips etc.

some places just get arsey if you take your custom elsewhere, david was perfectly fine, and understood fully about my budget limitations.

Spot on Andy. David has given me very good advice aswell. I think, as far as engine specialists go, you can't beat api on experience. However, I do think feel that their prices are aimed at those of us who can afford to 'throw' money at their cars.
I'd love to, but I can't, fact. And, as you have found out yourself, there are other specialists around that will save you a packet.
You just take more of a risk.

Aaaaargh, boohoo!, how am I going to feed my kids and at least just give them a sandwich on Xmas day.

I don't want much myself, just a few crumbs will do.

PLEEEEAAAASE don't take your work elsewhere.

That better? Sort of reaction you expected??

Good luck David APi

a man with a sense of humour. i like

no seriously david, some of the info you gave over the phone really opened up my limited knowledge. i shouldnt however of asked how much a remap was as im sooo tempted now (que barrage of subliminal pms from david telling me to do naughty things on my plastic )

crumbs are in the post.

chris, for the record, i kinda disagree with the throwing money comment. david at the start was totally honest, and i believe the quote he gave was very good. wouldnt so much saying going else where was more of a risk either. its a shame api wasnt closer and it did make a play for the travelling on my mind. but we makes our choices, and pays our monies. i wouldnt expect anything to change between me and david, hell i may even still need to buy a recon box from him anyways.

right il stop waffling as it looks like i need a shovel soon. david is cool with me, im cool with david.

known a while mines been going though. when it refused to move in 1st or reverse, i decided to give oomph and it broke

david himself said to drive it until it gave in, as we talked originally before saturday. credit where credits due, just as the box went, the price didnt go up. same cost all through. i personally think me and api may have dealings in 2008 somehow

if u have a run about, id be inclined to remove the box itself and take just the box to twhere ur taking it, that way,u`ll learn a bit,see how the clutch/flywheel fits etc and learn some DIY home mechanics.

from memory, its about 10 nuts and the prop shaft to remove to get gearbox out, i removed the engine/gearbox complete when i had to remove an impreza engine

94 jdm wrx without dccd

Same final drive and gear ratios, no dog engagement, helical cut teeth.

And yes im asking for a quote to supply and fit, plus any sundries of course.

Dog engagement lol no chance.

Cheers

Edit: What are straight cut gears like to live with, won't they have a reduced life compared to helical?
