What a crap article. Or at least an interesting article based around one crap photo. Can't believe there's so much excitement about this. RS Focus yes, but based on that, no.

Autocar article
retains two-wheel drive but will use a special semi-active limited-slip diff to improve traction and on-limit handling

£25k is a lot of coin, considering that an MY08 UK STI will be the exact same price.
The new RS will not employ an AWD system, it will remain FWD, using a semi-active LSD to help with traction.
EDIT - just CB's post a few above mine. Beat me to it!

The origional was RWD yes and what car, woudl love any of the original RS Escorts 1600 or the 2000.
Cant see them making it RWD, the cost would be similar to 4WD so may as well go down that route.

Ford are mass market. 280bhp in an fwd car will give great motorway performance. Traction is not much of an issue at motorway speeds and that power level.
That seems to be how things have gone these days. Anyone with any power under the bonnet just seems to want to use it on m'ways in mini "your not overtaking me" drag races

Ford haven't released any facts or figures so how do you know it is either fwd or 280bhp?

"We're not ready to confirm any of the technical details of the new Focus RS yet - Jost and his team have a lot to do to finalise the exact specification and styling," said Fleming. "But make no mistake, I can assure you that ultimately, the car we plan to launch will be worthy of wearing the coveted Ford RS badge."

I dont think they would make it rwd, cos the average joe cant drive rwd cars, you would end with lots of crashed RS's, I know loads of people that have said to me "I used to have a BMW, then I had close shave on a wet corner, rear end out, etc" then they sell the car cos it ****s them up.

Having seen at close quarters how much effort/shell rework it takes to put a rear diff into a Focus WRC car it would be such a fantastically complex project to productionise that I can't see it happening. Unless they built them all by hand that is.

Weren't Escort Cossie's handbuilt by Karmann at the same factory as VW Corrado's ? And Renault seem to manage it with the Clio V6 !

Because it all comes down to the rear suspension setup on the Focus - the unique 'control blade' system. This prevented Ford from producing the original FRS in AWD guise, as mounting a rear diff etc would have meant doing away with the control blade setup, which was a major selling point of the car.
Yes, but the Volvo C30 which is based on the Focus also has control blade suspension, and one particular variant had 4x4...

"Just as the Focus RS WRC owns the rally circuit, we want the new Focus RS to own the road, so we have the major competitors in our sights as we develop the car's performance, design, handling and braking."

It will surely be AWD. It's not difficult to do with the latest Focus platform. They'd be mad not to.
Should be a very nice piece of kit. The last Focus RS was a true enthusiast's car.

I suppose they know a certain number of die-hard RS fans will buy it no matter what, then there'll be those who buy it 'cos they like it's looks and those who simply don't know any different. If that number of buyers meets the profit over production quota for a limited run it will be built and sold to that spec. If for one minute they thought that 90% of them would remain unsold as people demand 4WD and 300+bhp then that is what the car would get. they are in business to make money, they do so by building cars which will make a profit over their manufacturing costs, what we think of those cars is irrelevant.

Spoke to my local dealer yesterday.
Name on list.
Have instructed him to let me know the second he knows the spec. If it's 4WD I'll be down within half an hour with my deposit cheque.

Im gonna do the same. If this is 4WD im getting it, i almost bought an ST (and an RS actually) jus before i got my STi but the ST was too overpowered for FWD imo.. kept interfering with TC. (and the dealer was an idiot to me with the RS!! so i didnt give him any of my £25k!!)
