Having a women in virtual tears on the tv does no one any good!!!

ITs like next time there is an E death in england, wheeling Leah Betts' parents out to scaremonger on tv!!!

Cant we make up our own minds!!!!!

Ooops we have and no one seems bothered about driving while on a mobile, Everyone does it cos its not really a risk unless your stupid!!!

Petebrant, i take your point mate, but i have done reaction tests for work before now, and we had some fun last xmas and tested everyone after the works lunch, i had five pints and there was one tenth of a second difference in my times!!!

This is why i say it was an unfair test, they used old ladies who they new would be the worst at reacting to anything let alone driving on a mobile!!

Am I correct in thinking that the thing that has got you annoyed is the comparison to drink driving? If so I am with you on that - it is a pathetic attempt to demonise talking on a phone. People are intelligent enough, that is, most people are intelligent enought to make up thier own minds without the media/government trying to over state the argument - I eman I happen to agree that it shouldnt be allowed, but dont go overboard.

Its like the cannibis interview on Radio 4 this morning. A Liberal MP said "Every signle time you have a cannibis cigarette, you are playing russian roulette with your mental health."

What. a. ****.

Its like the difference between radio and television, if you see what I mean.

When I speak on hands free in the car, (which I do at times when I really really have to) I know for a fact my driving gets worse. And if you think that yours doesn't, you're wrong.
I don't follow your logic. I agree a passenger can modify their behaviour, ie stop talking if something is going on, but you're not making eye contact with them (at least I hope you're not) so all you have is the voice.

It's not hard, if something critical is coming up that requires more attention while on hands free I just tell the other person to hang on a minute while I negotiate X. But then it's rare for me to be on a hands free call for more than a few seconds anyway, I just find out who it is and what it's about and make arrangements to call them back.

The thing that really gets me is the hypocrisy.

"Cannibis may cause a schizophrenic episode if you have a perpensity for it" is the official government line.

You know what the two biggest causes of admission to hospital for mental disorders are?

Dementia in the elderly, and alcohol related problems. "Possible cannibis connections represents something like 0.4% of mental patients.

Yes cannibis is the great evil.

Smoking tobacco will kill tens of thousands of people this year, and affect the lives of countless more. Cannibis will affect about 50.

Something is not right somewhere.

The government make no money off the back of cannibis, therefore it's public enemy number one...

.....if it were taxed... well that would be a completely different kettle of fish

If she was seen by a copper turning round while she is driving she would quite rightly be having a one way chat with him too. That example is entirely irrelevant to what we are saying anyway. Pete Brant is quite right with what he says about the interaction when using a phone. As a Radio Amateur I used to use a radio to chat with blokes when driving usinh a hand held microphone. I would not do that now because that was about as dangerous as the phone.

If you do drive with your children in the car you are also responsible to not allow yourself to be distracted by them and if they are causing trouble in the car then you should stop and sort them out.

When you are driving you are totally responsible not to do anything to cause you to lose the concentration or to reduce your ability to drive safely.

If you do have an accident and someone gets seriously injured or worse because of your actions in this respect-how will you feel then?

Les

You have to be a first class gland to hold your mobile whilst driving...

£30 fines were no deterrant, 3 points and £60 is clearly no deterrant, so maybe the threat of mahoosive fines and prison will work make these glands stop and think.

I am pleased with this news

Putting bigger and bigger penalties on something won't make a jot of difference if there isn't the resource to enforce it.

easy tiger!!! im only stating my point of view, which is there are far more stupid things you can do whilst driving!!!

And my point about the mum driving was people say mobiles are distacting, i say kids are far more distracting so why is it acceptable to drive with stroppy kids causing mayhem and throwinfg stuff about, but not while talking on a hands free?????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????

And again what about taxi drivers, are they immune to the effects of "having a conversation"????
they use radios to talk all the time!

p.s chill out "its only a ******* forum" quote webby!

I have to say that the fact that under these proposals you seem able to go to prison for a term longer than Chris Langham got for kiddy fiddling offences leads me to believe this country has utterly lost the plot.

To all those saying vote this lot out that's fine except that I don't see Mr. Cameron saying anything about doing an about turn on any of these issues that seem to have us so upset. All he ever seems to go on about are green issues which is justanother way of saying more taxation. It's pretty sad really.

I agree with the possible penalty for using the phone while driving, but I also agree it sounds silly when you compare it with the Chris Langham incident.

Personally, I'd increase the prison term for the other crimes rather than lower the term for "lesser" offences...

I totally agree OllyK. I always harp on about wanting more traffic enforcement by way of more police person to help neuter this ever expanding population of sh1te driving...

I also hope that the more the media push the fact that it is a bad bad thing at us, the more socially unnaceptable it will become.
I guess this is what helped get drink driving down from its peaks in the olden days - although it still happens too often...

Mate im on a hands free, that is where my quarrel lies, i agree holding a phone can be a little distracting for some people, but talking about banning handsfree and satnav is just stupid

Where does it end, no smoking, no radio, no touching any buttons unless stationary?????

There are bigger issues in this place called england to sort out first!!!!

Drivers should be low on the priority list!!!!!!

But they're not cos we all can afford to keep a car on the road so we can all afford to pay up big time!!!!

Where did that gem of common sense come from??????????

Ill leave the phone at home but drink 5 pints and drive??? WTF?????

They are also saying using a hands free or satnav is just as bad!!!!!!!

NO ITS NOT, YOU TOOLS!!!!!! LEAVE DRIVERS ALONE!!!!!!!! Just cos we have money we are not an easy target!!!!

Young mothers whose kids are screaming and throwing toys around the inside of a car are far more dangerous than me on my mobile!!!!!

Next they will be banning loud car stereos!!!!!!!

Your thoughts please people....................................

I dont think they were giving you the choice of either drink driving or using your mobile

Seriousy though, I agree, using mobiles whilst driving is bloody dangerous, you see it all the time, as soon as someone picks up their phone, they just lose concentration, start tailgating, dont indicate and generally drive badly. I would of thought hands-free was safer though

I'm still amazed by how we all suddenly have a need to be making/taking telephone calls in cars.

Every call I get from a person on a mobile in a car it is normally from a bored rep on the motorway wanting to while away some time.

Mobile phones have made us all telephone call'aholics. We ring in the street,in shops,on trains,in the car,on a bike,in the pub.Gawd how mobile phone companies must snigger at the obsession

And my view..yes it is dangerous and so are sat navs

How are sat navs dangerous???????

And getting lost and flapping and doing something daft isnt???

And what about map reading?

And most people have driven with point to point intructions either printed out from multmap(or some other website) or written down and glanced at them from time to time

Which is worse cos all of us have done at least one!!!!!

And ive seen old biddies slow from 60 to 20 just so they can read a sign, with satnav they would just keep going and be told where to go instead of having to think on the fly!!!

[QUOTE=GC8WRX;7497317]Just been watching the news, and a government quango says new research suggests driving with a hand held mobile is WORSE than driving over the limit!!QUOTE]

I think you either misheard that part or are misquoting it, what they actually said was

" new research has found that drivers taking a call on their hands-free mobile phone could be more dangerous than those who are driving at the legal limit of alcohol"

At the legal limit not over the legal limit, there is a huge difference.

Not really 80mg in 100ml and you're ''fine'', 81mg in 100ml and you're not. I'd also put money that some people at 81mg would be more in control than some on 80, but that's where the line is drawn.
