When do YOU turn your foglights on?

I remember following some plank on the bile once. He had his rear fogs and and, especially as it was raining (not very hard), I was being almost blinded from the refraction through my visor. Couldn't overtake because of the road/traffic and plank didn't respond to me flashing main beam on/off. He did finally pull over to talk to me - probably thought I was going to mug him mas he only wound the window down a touch.
'You fog lights are on, sir' I said - to paraphrase.
'How do I turn them off', he asked seriously.
I rode off very quickly before I lamped him ....
There are some seriously dozy drivers out there!

I agree with Boomer, fronts pointless fashion statement. No better than dipped beam. Rear if I am the last car in lousy conditions. If someone catches me up, turn it off.
Sometimes when a car catches me up (with their foglights on) I may leave it on. Until the visibility improves.

Just to stir things slightly, NOT that I'm right of course....
I used to do 30 miles to/from work, 14 on the motorway, the rest on the "twisties", used fogs to add peripheral vision in the dry only, (Oscar plus + main beam mostly
).
Many years ago I hit a Metro on a T-junction..... he said he didn't see me !
Took to using fogs in the dry to allow others to see my approach, NEVER been stopped or even finger wagged by the boys in blue tho'.
Don't usually have them fitted to the car now....
DunxC
P.S. Now have PIAA's with H4 bulbs in the fog position so act as a normal dipped beam but still not legal

I have thought about converting the front fog lights to driving lights - but have been put off by reports of the wiring burning out.
They would then come on with High Beam and help the pathetic Subaru lights ....

i dont use front fog lights, well i dont have any fitted to the car.but i dont see the point anyway never needed them, and with all these hi tech halogen headlight bulbs there available now,and whiter brighter light bulbs,a good set of quality lights will do the job..and it is if visibility is less than 100 meters, but what does that mean to the average who does not look further than their bonnet.. hehe

As I've said many times before, when stopping distances at 30mph are 23m, what benefit is there in a light which reaches 20m
When travelling slowly in dense fog they are purely to illuminate the verge, in normal conditions they are for selfish pillocks trying to look cool and failing miserably.

Ive just driven from Cornwall - London - Cornwall. Had thick fog on the way out and on the way back.
Never use front fogs, total waste of time IMO.
Rears, i use them when i think the car infront SHOULD have them on and at a point where it would have helped if i'd seen the car sooner.
And... turn them off as soon as th car behind KNOWS im there and isnt too far behind. I never just leave them on and forget about them.

so far I have switched the fogs on to check they are working and thats it and I would only put them on in thick fog not a bit of mist like alot of people!
what I find really funny though is , on a beautiful sunny day you might see someone with fogs on, then when its foggy they dont have any lights on!

If I overtake another lorry I will use the fog light whilst overtaking and switch it off again as I pull in so not to blind the driver who has just been overtaken. Remember that buses/lorries have flat backs and attract a lot more dirt making the normal lights harder to see.

It's your responsibility to ensure your lights are clean and functioning. If a kid has time to write 'Also in white' or 'If only my wife was this dirty' on the back, then you have enough time to wipe a rag over the lights. I see an increasing number of lorries using front fogs, but in fairness many seem to be foreign trucks (so they should be fined 10x). I've always enjoyed seeing trucks festooned with decorative lights, but they don't dazzle. Simply abide by the law and show some consideration to others is all I'm asking
