But they're usually so well behaved.....

To a certain degree that is very true, but certain breeds are still more likely to be aggressive than others if mistreated. If you look at the link on the first page there are a huge amount of attacks by rotties and pit bulls and it can't be because that many more are mistreated.

FWIW I also found these remarks about GSD characteristics very interesting, especially the last line.
"German shepherds are herding dogs, bred for generations to guide and
protect sheep. In modern society, they are among the dogs of choice for
families with small children, because of their extremely strong protective
instinct. They have three distinctively different kinds of bite: the
guiding nip, which is gentle and does not break the skin; the
grab-and-drag, to pull a puppy or lamb or child away from danger, which is
as gentle as emergency circumstances allow; and the reactive bite, usually
in defense of territory, a child, or someone else the dog is inclined to
guard. The reactive bite usually comes only after many warning barks,
growls, and other exhibitions intended to avert a conflict. When it does
come, it is typically accompanied by a frontal leap for the wrist or
throat.
Because German shepherds often use the guiding nip and the
grab-and-drag with children, who sometimes misread the dogs' intentions and
pull away in panic, they are involved in biting incidents at almost twice
the rate that their numbers alone would predict: approximately 28% of all
bite cases, according to a recent five-year compilation of Minneapolis
animal control data. Yet none of the Minneapolis bites by German shepherds
involved a serious injury: hurting someone is almost never the dogs'
intent."
==========
The article also makes it quite clear that powerful dogs, like Rotties, do more harm when they bite. dl

Just out of interest, how many times does it have to happen before somebody conceeds that they are indeed dangerous rather than bleating on that 'my dog is as safe as houses' ?
I wonder how many dog owners have said the same on various forums before their own mauled someone?

My neighbour has 4 or 5 of these miniture things, a couple look like mini Jack Russels, a couple like that thing Paris Hilton carries around in her hand bag..etc.
She always bleated on about how 'safe' these little angels were.... saw her a few days before Christmas and her hand was all bandaged, turns out that there had been a power struggle in the pack and the two largest mini dogs had set about each other...
She had tried to break them up and they turned on her... tore lumps out of her hand... in the excitment the rest of them all joined in...
At the end of the day they're just animals.... never ever trust them!

One hates to think what 4 or 5 angry Rotties would have done in the same situation........
Anyhow - why weren't you there to help her

Isin't it strange that if a dog attacks a human, it is put down and normally makes the National News.
If a human attacks another human it rarely makes the news and they get community service if they are unlucky !!
Who is the worst / most dangerous ??
And another one;
If I have sex with a sheep I can be arrested, yet if I kill it and eat it, and then turn its skin into a jumper that is ok ???
One will no doubt cause the animal discomfort for maybe 5 mins, the other will end its life.

Maybe the Sudan is the place for you
BBC NEWS | Magazine | R.I.P. Sudan's married goat
It seems simple - a bigger more powerful dog with a large powerful mouth will inflict more serious injuties than a mich smaller less powerful animal with a smaller mouth - that is just plain old common sense.
i suppose the difference is reduced when it is a smaller person less able to defend themselves - say a child.

4 or 5 Rotties together, at any one time is simply playing Russian roulette, but then the 'half a brains' of this world know that. It's the feckin dimlows that are taking over the asylum that is the problem.

how blind to the issue can some people be? some large dogs are breed, over hundreds of years - to be able to fight/kill other animals/bait other animals. Some small dogs are breed not to......if you think you can take offspring from both and expect them to both be as likely or unlikely to cause harm then you are very stupid.
I have lived with 20+ bull terriers over the years and, despite some of them having won obedience awards, entered crufts, etc (not chav dogs) they ALL had the ability (mental and physical) to do damage if they wanted.....in a way some other breeds are just not capable of.
Bull shark or Reef shark......neither plan on eating humans as a means of daily living - go kick both on the nose and see if all animals are the same!

Dogs are a sub-species of the wolf family. Of course the probability of one attacking a child varies with the breed, training and circumstances on the day, but I expect the risk is never zero. Anyone who thinks it is is clearly deluded.
I don't plan on ever leaving my kids alone with any animals capable of doing them harm. Follow that rule and everything'll be just fine I expect.

Just how often does this have to happen for people to pull their heads out of the sand.
The comments from the dog loving side about training and control are all very true, heard them all last week in the other thread about how these dogs are no more dangerous than any other. Yet surprise surprise it is the same breed attacking someone yet again. It's not coincedence. How many more people need to be mauled?

If I found a jack russel attacking a child I'd kick and probably kill it (The Dog before anyone starts ).
If it were a Rottie and I tried kiccking it I'd probably lose my leg.
And there in lies the problem with big savage dogs - the damage they can cause when they turn nasty is much worse than a small dog.
Therefore we need protecting from them - by means of a decent set of laws that prevents dick heads from owning them.
As for parents leaving their kids alone with devil dogs - well they're just as bad as the McCanns !

Does the fact that Imprezas have become popular with undesirables make it a bad car or mean that whomever has one is a chav??
No, of course not.
Come on people, I'm all for sensitivity to other members, but lets think before we infract!!
Someone else said pretty much the same thing earlier in the thread!!
I even winked after using the C word!!!

Oi, who infracted me for that perfectly fair comment???? It's hardly an insult to other members to say that some breeds of dogs are more desireable to undesirables who want them as a status symbol!! It's unequivocally NOT the same as saying that anyone who has a large dog is an undesirable.

I was infracted fro calling PSL and old ***, and here is why - as written by the sad infracter. Fortunatly the webmaster used comon sense and understood the context - overturned it.
FFS be warned unles you refer to everyone as sir or madam and agree wholeheartedly then expect infractions, shame some see fit to abuse the system, fortunately the mods and Webmaster are pretty good but does not stop the pc infracters whoever they are, not likely to have the courage of thier convictions and own up are they
Infraction reason as per my PM notification (so as written by the PC infracter) so in their PC world i am anti-gay as i used the word *** (can i say gay or ***)
Reason: Abusive / Offensive Post
-------
oversensitive old *** USE OF THIS LANGUAGE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE it is offensive to the homosexual community

Paul As I always do I stand by the infraction I gave NS04.
I didnt like the comment he made, and I took it personally that he suggested that because I own a large rottweiler that I am a chav.
I will get banned if I am in the wrong, I cant say I care though as I have had about as much as I can from this thread, I cant believe what a bunch of small minded idiots you are!

Chill chap
Please do not refer to sn in general as small minded idiots, that sort of generalisation is the work of a weak mind, in your case i think this is down to anger, not stupidity!
Yes there are some small minded ***** on sn, it is a big commiunity, there are also some smart people who are happy to get stuck into a debate and have thier say.
I do not read nso4's post as all owners are chavs, i think you will agree that some are as the bought their dogs as statements of their hardness, etc. see my post some pages back about people and why they have dogs for right and wrong reasons.
I think the attacks bare out that there is something wrong with the dogs and most likely the owners are to blame in some way.

Firstly I apologise if my remarks offended you.
BUT
With all due respect you have made a fundamental error here:
Saying that large dogs appeal to undesirables as status symbols, which they do, unquestionably....just as Subarus appeal to chavs, is NOT saying that anyone with a large dog is a Chav anymore than saying anyone with a subaru is a chav!
There was also a wink at the end of my post!
Infractions for insulting members should be given for just that. I made a valid point which YOU misinterpreted and took as a personal dig. You weren't even being quoted in the reply, Pimmo2000 was. It wasn't an insult either on a semantic or intentional level. You've been on here long enough to realise that I'm one of SNs genuine posters and don't deliberately annoy people, you could have simply asked for clarification in the thread or Pmd me!
Fair enough, we all make mistakes, but I would hope in light of the above you would apologise.
FYI I've asked Webby to remove the infraction, but have stated that I do not wish any negative ramifications for your account in the light of this incident.
Can't say fairer than that mate!
Regards,
Ns04
PS
I have owned large dogs myself and I have a subaru! I may have even shopped in Lizzy dukes.....I was young, I didn't have much money OK!!
