Back nature or nurture....

Six years ago Fi-Fi found a skinny Staffi-Lab X sat at work looking pathetic, he was cold and wet, and had a dump in reception.....

So she took him in, and then we find all he has are his street-fighting wits razor sharpened.... First look at my two collie X softies and he went stiff !
I panicked and slammed the door......

Slowly we socialised him by proving our superiority(?), and strict discipline.
Sadly the "attack" first ask questions later mentality took a while to beat,
one day he just "went" for my male dog (Sam), as he launched I grabbed Sam and lifted him above my head for safety.... Fi-Fi managed to get an upper arm in the way of Dylan who bit full force. She screamed, he stopped and she almost fainted from the pain. The next day revealled the most amazing technicolour bruising I've ever seen ! From shoulder down to elbow, and v. swollen too

From that day on he's never shown any more violent behaviour, he's always been fabulous with kids, sticks in the face, footballs, stones, even a cricket bat... no reaction ! Would not (!) leave him alone tho'.

But here's the rub, my two don't enjoy kids unless they are calm and approach from the front... and I wouldn't trust them as they seem a bit jealous of kids.

Sorry about the waffle, but I enjoy the dogs for being dogs, no trophy, no hard man act, no burglaries (touch wood !).

You have a point there of course.
To be honest unless a dog is a working animal I don't really see the point of deliberately choosing a pet/companion that is so helpless and yet demanding at the same time?

Some could/would almost say the same about a child, if they didn't want one. For the first few years at least, a child is relatively helpless and demanding at the same time, but people still have them.

I would think most people would have a dog, as they have a love of them, and find they can be a good 'friend. For that reason, they are quite happy to give their time to care for them.

As usual there's alot of complete and utter nonsense spouted here.

Its always the same, the opinionated but clueless deem themsleves to be right regardless of having no actual experience with these things.

I have had a collie for nearly 7 years now and he's the most docile loving dog you could wish for. 8 months ago i was offered a Rottie pup at 9 weeks old. He's now a very big powerful dog. He's also as docile and gentle as the collie. He's not chained up in the garden he lives with us as part of our family. As with all things like this it's learned behaviour. He knows how to act because of living as part of the family. He's an excellent guard dog but he knows his place. Its without doubt to do with the dog's surroundings and the way the dog is taught to behave!!

Any creature be it a child or a dog will grow up according to how it has been parented. Hence chav scum with out of control kids also have out of control dogs.

Fair anomaly, but is it through nurture or nature though? My money is on nature with nurture (or lack of) playing a supporting role...

Work it out. Vaped by a mod I would imagine. Post 42 quotes your insult which you repeated in 102. I am not wasting any more of my time on this childish stuff. Take it up with SN in Policy if you don't agree. dl

Normally I would not get involved in an arguement, but to be honest, I would just give up on this thread. Nobody is going to agree, no matter what arguement is put forward either way, and it is just turning into a slanging match.

I am fairly impartial, as I don't own a dog myself, but I do like them. However, I tried on this thread and another recent one, to put across a reasonable point about problems with dogs not all being down to breed, nor the owners sometimes, but it falls on deaf ears. I haven't really defended one view or another, but because people have such strong views one way or another, it becomes pointless even debating the issue.

I have been shot down for making what I thought was a fair comment, it seems to me there is going to be no changing of anyone's opinion on either side, and all that is coming out of this thread is flinging insults, and that is not a healthy debate.

I'm not sure what your meaning is here.. but Breeds are not dangerous.. its individual animals !

I think you'll find the meaning is, that most every time a dog attack is in the news it's one of the same few breeds. How people can think this is irrelevant defies belief imo

They would be individual animals from a particular few breeds yes?
