yeah i can understand that but without opening a whole debate about this, insurace cost a fortune at his age and so does everything else. when your 20 you do what you can and take a few risks.
i know i did!

hi steve he is 20, to insure an 03 sti your gonna be looking at 3 grand and thats after you spent the 13 grand buying a good one and then you gotta spend 2 grand to get it to 400 hp
THATS 18 GRAND how on earth is that cheaper than modding his classic??
IT IS NOT cheaper! lol! unless ive got myself confused mate??

The error was compounded when an ambiguous question on a proposal form for my next insurance meant another theft of my next and more expensive vehicle was refused.
That was 17 years ago, if I add a sticker to the car, the insurance company get told.

Thats some wierd calculations, he has his vehicle to sell, here is a 2004 sti for £9k Autotrader - SUBARU IMPREZA 2.0 WRX STi TYPE UK 4dr (air con)=
Insurance doesnt count as cost towards mods as you have to pay it to get any vehicle, and it wouldnt cost £2k to get to 400bhp unless your pushing the boat out
![Stick Out Tongue](images/smilies/tongue.gif)
I figure with the sale of his car he is only out of pocket £5k, and it will cost more than £5k to safely make 400bhp on a 98 car

But.... you are statistically more likely to have an accident or cause an accident and hence the insurers will ask for more money to cover you.
Trying to cut corners and not declare mods is daft as they will only find out in the event of a claim and you will end up not having any cover and much worse.

I stated the facts, that engine is no good for 400bhp, damn those pistons can snap at 250bhp let alone 400, yet i gave the advice that was needed, either go for an engine rebuild (plus accommodating mods) or get a car that can take 400bhp to start with.
There is nothing wrong with what I posted, I think pretty much all the tuners out there will agree with me on what I put down, a uk turbo wont do 400bhp on standard internals.

i think 250 is a little low tony, iv'e been running more than that for 2 years, and approx 340 for 8 months with no probs (touch wood lol, pats head)

Ive known people just running an exhaust (dp cat still in place, not detting) so about 230-240bhp who have had a piston let go, not nice ![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
But in reallity running more than 1.2bar and your pushing it for reliability.

ahh and there in lies your problem, treat them like crap and bang they go.
while i don't exactly treat it with kid gloves, i always warm mine up, let it cool down, never thrash it if i think somethings amiss etc etc.
when its warm and ready to go then i do give it some lol
you treat anycar badly and it will break pretty quickly

There are lots of variables here, but the std internals will do 400bhp
Andy F has said as much on his website and, lets face it, he knows a damn sight more about these engines than us lot!
HOWEVER
As I'm sure Andy would agree, if the car is getting on, or if its a daily driver or likely to be driven hard (dragged, tracked etc), then upgrading the internals is a good idea.
My MY99 runs 320bhp without issue. When I had it upgraded both David and Bob Rawle assured me that if looked after properly and not driven like a loon it woiuld be fine.
I think that's the key. Increasing the power will invariably compound the effects of slack maintenence or harsh driving. If you look after them and don't drive like a nutter, they're strong engines.
I think some people pull bhp aspirations out of the air: 320ish bhp is so much easier and cheaper on a UK non-Sti. On a classic shape car, this equates to a power to weight ratio near as damnit the same as the baby V8 Aston Martin. As a daily driver, that's more than enough, take my word for it!
That's not to say that you won't want more, but you do need to be prepared for the cost. You should figure on the std gearbox and clutch giving up the ghost at the very least. Over 2k to sort that out alone!
Ns04
PS FYI most scoobies I'm aware of that have had the typical stage one/two mods and a remap run boost pressures of 1.3bar and above, so I think 1.2 might be a bit conservative
