P1 brakes were indeed not 5hite as you claim and were adequate for normal drivers. If they weren't adequate for drivers who indulge in heavy and sustained braking, then you could fit with specialist pads, hardly a massive mod. The difference here is I have owned a P1 for 4 years and did 60k in one and never experienced brake fade. I'd wager there's not much difference between P1 brakes with better pads then the Alcons option which were very expensive. (£350 for a set of replacement discs IIRC)

For that reason, I'm wondering how peoples' new, whizzy calipers will stand up to the dust, grime and general detritus of motoring.

I'd like to see a test. I've had a 6 pot big brake set up on an Impreza from standard 4 pots and didn't notice a huge difference. Apart from having a vastly lighter wallet. The pads I have on now are the cheapest of the cheap and quite crap for high speed braking, noticebly worse than OEM pads. Given that I do a maximum of 50 mph everyday it's of no concern to me.
Unless you're going to be involved in very heavy and sustained braking from very high speeds ( like tracking) then the standard 4 pot set up will be fine.

I'm still undecided as to my next Impreza. Its going to be a toy so I'm sticking with a classic. If it was a daily, I would take a Prodrive Bug every time.
I've not driven a Type R or RA but have driven a couple of P1s. As the car is going to be a toy I want to put it on limited miles insurance or classic insurance. Classic insurance is for cars 10 years and over which pretty much rules out the P1.
So type R or RA V4 or 5. late dash, not fussed on rear spoiler (as I've got older I prefer the understated V4/UK rear spoiler) Must have the blue front seats and be Sonic Blue. Only thing I'm not sure is that although its a toy its still got to fit all 3 of us so I'm thinking that 4 doors is still going to be handy. I'm waiting on some more detailed pics of a V5 RA V Ltd on its way over at the moment.
Only thing with a 4 door is unless you know, its just another 4 door Impreza. Think my ultimate Impreza would be a V5/6 WRC V Ltd Type R.
Is there a big difference between the different 5th gears available? It will do one or two long journeys (Castle Combe, Silverstone from Wales) but its not a big issue.
Is there such a car as a WRC Type R?

For f sake someone put a end to this thread it will go on forever
i am no expert but if it was my money i would buy a blown engine typer and then
spend a fortune and get a 2.5 bottom end and fit sti heads(and other mods),then u will have a reliable type r with 350-400 bhp

The brakes were the first thing I changed on my P1, they were truely shocking! The pads and discs were fine when i took them off. My previous cars all had stronger bite and resisted fade far better.(Clio 172, Civic Type R)

Hi all i have a v 3 type r shoter gears and all.
I have driven it everywhere including the south of France and the Alps. The short gearing was annoying sometimes. But once we got down to the Verdon Gorge and the Col de Turini, I could pretend I was Petter Solberg all over again.

Isn’t there a definitive list of the differences of each of these STI models?
I’m sure I’ve seen a list with all the STI / RA / V-Limited / 555 / etc, matched with their options like DCCD, Gear ratios, and their model codes.
Anyone got a link to it?

lets face it.. Type R is the better looking car... and a P1 owner will always secrectly think the same
but P1.. easier to insure (?)
and has ABS.
but only comes in BLUE

Actually I used the DCCD on saturday night, thanks very much for asking.
And as for the engine revving its nuts of at a half decent speed, I'm very happy with it thanks! Its a weekend / pleasure car so it doesn't bother me, I enjoy it in fact, and I'm used to owning Honda's so that would explain why I don't mind a rev happy engine.
