Looking at the pics I would say that the sti looks like a mg rover with that ****e back fin also unless you buy sti spec the power isnt exactly great either, With the new Vxr's and golf coming out with more power than a wrx.
Sorry.. but even If had the money I wouldnt buy one, I will stick with my " Outdated WRX Classic" which is producing 300bhp after one mod and will always have more character.

but with all due respect, many posters will base their opinion on just exactly what you're saying they shouldn't - looks alone. Bear in mind that many posters will have other deciding factors (such as "other halfs"!) who see the car and just say "no"! May I also refer you back to a certain other half who said that the Type R had to go because of the uncomfortable seats......
The other half did complain the rear seats in the type R were but her and my biggest gripe it was a 2 door , and i was the only one to drive it going back to a Classic there was not enough gain for the pain of a dated car, as you know it's my car has to be fun and practical
Then there are threads Comparing the EVO X concept against the 08 WRX FFS
I have seen many Pics of beautiful women and been disappionted to see in real life and vice versa
I'm not keen on the hatch back looks and much prefer a saloon. but I'm willing to wait for a go in a STi if it doesn't suit my needs or i just don't like it. I won't buy one and post up why
IMHO
Tony
Ps happy new year Dan

However, whilst you accuse and label many posters as "tossers" for their negative feedback based on preliminary views and internet gossip. On the flip side of the coin, it could be argued that your post is the "subaru fan-boy" approach...... and regardless of the smilies, could be classed as trolling, despite the frustration and annoyance that it hides

It's very similar to the criticism of the T25 in EVO magazine, "not EVO enough". Utter tosh, especially as you adjust the EVOness of it's drive anyway. And for the looks, wait till you see one in the flesh, they look much better than in the pics.
The test driver at Tsukuba had no problems drifting the new STI right round the long fast corner onto the finish straight, or the next wide hairpin, so I think that EVO testers just don't have the ***** to drive it hard enough

For me what I'm after from a new impreza (given getting 300bhp in a classic is a snip these days):
-4 door saloon/5 door wagon
-Minimum 400bhp so the power weight would be better than my current classic (having a quick poke around on here reveals 400 should not be a problem for subaru to engineer given the number of tuners who can hit it with relative ease)
-Something that looks agressive, in the way the classic did, evo's do, skylines have done. ie japanese styling, not a naff attempt to blend in with euro junk. It does not have to be pretty, just distinctive.
-DSG gearbox option. Nissan and Mitsubishi now have these boxes, subaru need them to remain competitive.
-Less than £30k on the road.
I dont doubt the new sti is very well engineered and probably the best ever sti from a technical veiwpoint. But it looks aweful, there are german deisels that can run it all the way to the line even over short sprints, and its not a saloon. It really is a no brainer in my mind between the new sti and the evo X in my mind.

LOL - I'm so glad you didn't take my post as a whinge!!
Your cars have always been fun with the added advantage of being able to carry the family
You and I have known each other a fair while and I know that you're mega-pro Subaru , but will criticize when required, and IMHO, that's a good thing - especially on this site, where there are so many anti-Scooby members but we're now classed as old-timers There are many newer members who wouldn't see your post in the manner in which I think it was intended. I certainly do know that's not the case - I wouldn't wish to meet a nicer person on or off Scoobynet (not wishing to sound like a "kiss-a$$"!! )
Like I said though, many will judge a car on looks alone. Personally, yes, it's a factor, but there's other things to take in to account, such as performance (a biggy for me), finance, and what I call "live-ability" - how you live with the car each day. And this is where I fear that the Subaru starts to come up against stiff competition (in their new market). Even more so when you compare it to the Japanese competitors.......
Anyhoo - hope you had a good New Year I'm still recovering
See you soon buddy
Dan
PS regardless, your Type R was a very nice machine - just not as nice as the new one

I'm a bit concerned that my post may have sounded "subaru fan boy" now!
Which isn't the case - I bet the new one still has **** paint that chips when you look at it
I just find reviews like that frustrating - like when they test the 1.5 and constantly mention the STI... it's like complaining your 1.6 Ford Escort isn't as good as a Escort Cosworth. Just bonkers and silly.

That about sums it up for me, I'm afraid. I don't doubt the performance is good and it can be a hoot to drive (driver aid's off), but I couldn't see myself buying the new hatch given the competiton. Just compare it to the Hawkeye Sti, which in my opinion looks superb - Subaru got it right for a couple of years and then blew it in the looks department.
And all this coming from a fugly owner.

Having drove the WRX (S-GT) and give a rough Idea on the Cabin size between the 3 generations of Subaru's
1) the Classic is a 4 Adult size cabin with 21/2 suit case boot (spoilt by internal hinges)
2) the newage is a 4 Adult + child size cabin with 21/2 suit case boot (spoilt by internal hinges)
3) The "Hatch" is 5 Adult size cabin with 2 suit case boot (although rumour STi boot space is smaller than WRX)
4) Driving position much lower and better
I'll let you know about power and handling when i try out the STi
IMHO
Andy Mc dont start on about bugeyes I loved mine to bit's

Do you think Mitsubishi had the right idea when they just dropped using "Lancer" when naming the Evo in order to separate it from the frankly coma-inducing pensioner specials?
Just talking to someone I know who's got a 1.5 as a courtesy car at the moment, and other than complaining about a lumpy gear change reckons that for what it is, it isn't half bad. It wouldn't need to be too great to be better than the last 1.6 Focus that I drove anyhow (hateful little car).

When the guy posted 'classic WRX' I have assumed that he meant the 250bhp early wrx models that are here, there and everywhere... but if its a late spec 276bhp, then I apologise, its maybe only boosting to 1.5bar.
Regardless, I'd hope that whatever WRX it is there is more than one mod on it if its running 300bhp.
Cheers,
Grant

Just to add a positive view on the whole 2008 STI question ...
When I first saw the WRX I had a major downer on it (https://www.scoobynet.com/other-marq...what-next.html).
I'll be giving the WRX a wide berth , but having now seen the pics of the production STI, Subaru seem have listened as there have been some good improvements since the original concept teaser shots. And have to say, I'm starting to like it. It's not pretty, but it has a certain functional appeal a bit like the glorious old Integrale. The Integrale also sported a set of huge arches over the base delta. I had a couple of Integrales ages ago and ... I don't know ... could the STI be a worthy successor?? Really hope so.
Think the UK jury is still out on the new STI handling/ performance. Evo didn't love the Jap version. Edmunds liked the US version (but then they compared it with a Shelby Mustang!). I'm waiting for some more tests of the UK car on UK roads with UK fuel.
Subaru ... please get this right ...
cheers.
