Just bought a 98 R 16v Golf Gti for the missus. Heated leather seats, air-con, electric mirrors and roof for £1250. No great shakes in the performance world, but I've done 1.5k in it compared to about 200 miles in the Impreza since I bought it! MPG can get to a heady 40 mpg, usually around 35 doing 90 on a motorway. Insurance for her with 1 years no claims and 22 is £640 I think.

I got an Escort gti last year. 1 owner, FSH, years tax, just been serviced, recent cambelt + clutch, for £300
OK, it might be on par with the mk3 Golf as being the least deserving car to be given a gti badge. However, it's cheap to run, quite nice to sit in, looks nice (imo), and can be quite fun to drive. On the motorway the fuel consumption is good, but tbh round town it's crap.
