I am contracted to do 37.5 hours, I do a bit extra each week, previously I was contract so would do perhaps 42 on average cos I got paid for it !

Now, I get paid pretty well and dont mind doing a bit extra, have set up a pc at home and if I am bored or remember something I will put some time in, they will ask for weekend work for releases and migrations but you get time in leiu.

Also, I live 15 mins away so regardless of what time I leave I havent got a big commute to do. I get in about 8.15 and leave between 5.00 and 5.30, I will stay indefinitely if I am needed.

David, I dont think anyone would call your missus a whinger, thats a long day even leaving at 5.30 when you include the commute.

What really winds me up, and I saw it at the Police, people who do the same times, to the minute each day, they leave at their normal time whatever is happening and people make allowances for this, I reckon that if you have a problem at home work will usually let you go to deal with it, so if there is a problem at work, stay and sort it out. Local Goverment seems to be home to some people who wouldnt last 2 minutes in the real world, the clever but lazy and those waiting for retirement.

David, if it's her first job out of college, I certainly wouldn't expect her to leave it so quickly. There would be some explaining to do at the next interview. See if she can stick it for 6 mths.
For the idea of hanging around just because no-one else leaves, start throwing the word "efficiency" around, see what happens

Thanks Brendan (and J4CKO).

I am not sure I agree completely. She has had a variety of jobs since she graduated incluing some unpaid work experience stuff and temporary agency work. Actually quite useful in getting into the work ethic. I think she could easily mix in the current job, even if it is mentioned, into her recent mixed bag experience. But you are right in that she doesn't want too many of these things on her cv. In her case it is more psychological in that she wants to give it a crack even if it depresses her and completely messes with any life outside of work and she would see it as a failure if she changed now.

Of course it is her call but I would rather she was happy in what she did! d
