Refused all test drives until I saw one i liked and the cash to pay for it was in my hand.Never even been a passenger in one, just knew the spec.

Went to see one at Adams in Aylesbury. He started her up,the decatted PE exhaust started the slippery slope for me,then on the test drive the salesman said I could put my foot down to overtake sunday driver on back lane.

VROOOOMMMMMM!

That was that car sold!No turning back now!Best purchase of my life!

A very happy Steve

I'd fancied a 4wd for the winter up here as I was going to Aviemore a lot. Did not want a big jeep but needed room in the back so had to be a 4wd estate. Not many of them about so decided to try one of these impreza thingies.
On the test drive I put it into third and then thought Sh*t!! where did all that power come from. Bought it straightaway.

What clinched it for me was that by selling the black Vauxhall Carlton (hated by my wife - "The Hearse" she called it) she actually LIKED the red scoob
simple eh?

Cool

I test drove one 2 years ago whilst on holiday in Yorkshire. I had my wallet out ready to pay a deposit BUT the wife did not like the interior?
Then last August I saw the UK300.
Whilst looking at the brochure I had ordered 2 days earlier the wife (Hi Joan)looked over my shoulder and said thats nice. 30 mins later we are in the showroom ordering it. September the 1st 2001 I picked it up and have not stopped smiling since.

All the best

I'd spent a week test driving other cars - a Mitsubishi FTO (rock hard suspension, dreadful visibility and an engine that didn't feel anything like 200bhp), Toyota Celica (rather bland and I kept headbutting the windscreen!) and Nissan 200sx (much better but lots of turbo lag). I was getting depressed.

I then took a test drive in a MY96 Turbo. The salesman warmed it up and found a suitable twisty B-road, and then we swapped places. Having driven the other 200bhp cars earlier in the week I was quite complacent about it - I pulled out of the lay-by, changed into 2nd and floored it. Nothing happened, for about 1/2 sec.

Then the turbo kicked in. I shouted something rude.

Sold.

Up against a Ferrari 355 at a set of traffic lights with salesman in the back & girlfriend in the front. The Ferrari was there first when I pulled up, he must have seen the bonnet scoop come hoving into view in the corner of his eye. The lights were on red as he looked over with a look of "hmm another Max Power boy to whup" I was`nt going to have a go, honest but when to lights turned green I thought why not. I got the car rolling then just floored it. Apparantly the look on the Ferrari guys face was a picture according to the salesman in the back He must have though "whats this 4 door saloon with 3 people in beating me off the lights Luckily (for him or me?) I had to turn off less than a hundred metres down the road. I got out of the car shaking with adrenalin
And that was that, I got it.

Always like me fast cars and would see a Red MY96 (which was new at the time) parked at the side of road on my way to work everyday whilst driving my 16V Clio. Noticed that the spot lights were the size of dinner plates and genrally found the car quite pleasing. I looked into them at that point. The Ex wasn't happy about such a car(that's why she's the Ex now!!!) and thought the money be better invested in a new kitchen or something. After she took me for everything I had (except the hoover) it took me a little while to save, then one day I was at the car auctions in Chelmsford when I saw a vision, namely a Terzo, how it sparkled in the mid-day sun. From THAT moment on I bored the world and his wife about the car. 18 months later and after travelling up and down the country I found the perfect model in Scotland, it now sits pride of place in my Garage, with P1 wheels and a full Scoobynet exhaust.

My dream came true,
Sad bu&&er ain't I,

Ed

Well now kids, are sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin...

I was looking at the Peugeot 306 GTi-6 at a local (Canary Wharf) car show with a view to buying, and the MY01 was also there. Now I've wanted an Impreza for about three years, but never really had the cash to buy and was under the impression I would need twenty odd grand. I sat in the MY01 and LOVED it. Listened to the engine, fairly understated looks, not a sport's car and felt 'this is right for me.' The dealer and I had a chat and he told me that prices were dropping sharply and suggested a used MY97/98.

I went away and had a look. And he was right. I picked up a copy of Used Car Buyer in September-ish (by the way, all those who emailed me for a copy see my thread) in Maidstone (having been kicked around the courtroom by the Judge) and from then on, it's been all I could talk about. Finally, the money has come in and I'll have it within a few days.

Maz.

Remember the Program that followed the Greater Manchester Police stolen vehicle squad round every week for six weeks? About five years ago.
Remember the bit where they're following a Scoob in an Escort Cosworth and a non-standard Astra GTE 16V.
When the Astra passenger cop said
"F<beep>k! we're losing him! he's just F<beep>ked off!"
And then you saw the Cossie with the bonnet up.
THAT's when I wanted one. Took me three cars and two hard work promotions in the meantime, and it's sucking me dry now, but when I arrive at work, I'm the only one in the office smiling

About 6 years ago I was with a m8 cruising in my Ford 560hp modified V8 in Sydney. I always was a V8 man and the sound is the best you'll ever hear from any car. My m8 said, "There's a WRX. They're a 2 litre turbo 4 cylinder. They're fast from standard, they do 13/14 second passes down the quarter." I freaked and found it hard to believe. It was the first time I saw one and I must admit I did not like the looks.

I did my homework and looked up the mags and he was right. They were fast. I started seeing more and more of them on the street and at the street meetings, (drags at Eastern Creek raceway), and at my friends workshop getting modified.

As time went past and with the newer model years being produced, they started to get more attractive. These little pocket rockets started to impress me, plus they sounded, not the same as, but close to a V8.

Because I was moving to Greece, I could not have a V8, because to have a V8 in Greece you have to show the tax man that you make 38 million drachs a year, which is roughly 70,000 GBP. For a 2 litre, you have to show the tax man that you make 13,000GBP 13, 000 GBP is a huge wage in Greece. The average wage here is only 7,000 GBP. If you don't make that money, eg the 13,000, you still get taxed as if you did make that money, just because you own a 2 litre.

So a Scoob was the best car that I could have here and I bought one. MY00. They go better than a Standard V8, sound almost as good and are the best car for Greek twisty roads and suit me with the tax bit. Plus with some minor mods, they fly even more.

Cheers,

Wrexy.

I bought one because i couldnt find a Cosworth in decent condition for reasonable money.

What actually sold this car to me, was the overall condition for a 7 year old car. Absolutely spotless, compared to the others I'd seen .

Lovely noise although it could be louder .
Telepathic steering.
Better looks than the equivalent Sapphire Cosworth.
Not as fast as the equivalent Cosworth but hardly anything in it.
Brakes are poor(ish).
Good build quality (compared to my old Sapphire).

Extremely happy with it. Glad I let my head rule my heart because I've ended up with a mint car for very good money.

For me it was an article in Performance car where they ran a load of cars at the Pod. Their red MY97 longtermer managed a fraction over 5 seconds to sixty ,beating that years Nissan touring car in the process.

I was looking to purchase a reasonably fast and practical used car, and had a short list of 911C4 (964), M3 (previous model), 328i touring and a 5 door Scoob.

Drove two 911C4's which were fast but the previous owners service bills were horendous, two M3 Evos which felt slow and lifeless, a 328i nice sound very bland interior and rattled.

Went to test drive a 5 door Sti, but they only had a Gravel Express (5 door WRX with bull bars and raised suspension). Howevwer I was still amazed. It was so f**king quick. I stopped at some traffic lights dialed up 5500 rpm dropped the clutch and the thing just took off without any wheelspin on a wet road. At a roundabout I found that you could steer it on the throttle, which was anew experience for me. Wasn't sure about the looks, until I saw a MY99 5 door, and eventually bought one of these.

Watching the rally... just loved the way the car looked and chattered.

I then changed jobs were having a fun car would be financially viable... just after watching four Scoobs sail past me one sunny Sunday morning.

I walked into a dealers and asked for a test drive, the next week I test drove and got out of the car with a grin on my face. The power, the sound of the turbo and the burble of the engine. Plain grin factor was enough and wondering why the drive home took so long!

Love it and sometimes take it out just for a drive going nowhere in particular!

*Sniff* That was the most beutiful story in the world.

I decided to finally have a grown-ups car having had one sports cars after another. My dad basically told me that saloons can be fast too and I was slightly sceptical about a scooby ever beating my modified 200SX at first. I saw a bloke in a blue scooby at a traffic light in a bypass near where I live and we proceeded with the ritual and when the lights turned green, he basically shifted past me the same way I would pass a moped at a traffic light.

Sold my old 200SX at a bargain price and got myself an imported Jap WRX on the 31st October. Thanks to the SVA and DVLA, I finally got to drive it legally for the first time two Sundays ago. Then yesterday, a woman in an Espace slammed into my back while I was queing at the traffic lights....but that another story.

Tried an MY99 - liked to drive but hated the interior and finish.

Saw the MY01 at the London motorshow and loved it to be honest. I was actually looking at an Alfa or a Jeep at the time - not the scooby.

Boy did i make the right choice!!

After G'ford council decided that the (lack of) drainage on the A3 was fine, despite the 1 ft deep pond in the fast lane (that I hit @ 70mph) on Clandon bridge bend... decided I needed four wheel drive and a set of arm bands... so ordered one..

What clinched it was when I went to the dealership with my father and said "I'm getting one of those"... he then proceeded to lecture me for the next 1 hour on sports cars and my track record

So I'm on my third one now, and not due to right offs either!

2 weeks after I got my 16v Clio, I was doing 120ish in the outside lane when I saw this big "get out my f*****g way" bonnet scoop come up behind me, next thing I know it was in front of me, thing is I never saw it go past! that's when I knew I had to have one. It took a few years, but the desiscion was made that we needed a 4 door for baby - so we just did it, & got a lot of stick about the price, eg: you could have got a brand new 4 door hatch for that! but to me it's the best money I've (or hubby!) has ever spent - it even does better mpg than the Clio!! & I couldn't have a slow car - it would have ruined my reputation as a girl racer with the lads!

Always liked them. Then went to meet a couple of mates for breakfast and drove past a Subaru Dealership. On the way back popped in and persuaded myself to have a test drive. I was driving a GTI-6 and was loving it.

Day of the test drive it had been chucking it down. Anyway I got in the passengers seat and set off. The salesdude took it nice and easy for the first 5-10mins then let rip. I was really impressed, then he decided to head for the motorway. He was hammering it down this road and it had a nice sharp bend before joining the carriageway.

At this point my feet starting feeling how deep the carpet was, he threw it in and to my horror there was a large pool of water across the road. I pulled out my rossary beads, I went 'FuKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK' he just put his foot on the gas and sailed straight through.

It was enough to make me sign on the dotted line.

Nowadays, I just grin like an idiot when I get behind the steering wheel! (Can anyone say 'the feelings mutual'?)

Hi Pen

What did it for me....

1)Always been a car nut since I can remember, had been following with interest since that first Autocar article.

2)Colin won the World Rally Championship in one

3)Decided on 4wd cos it rains so much up here

4)The first 150 yards in the (thoughtfully warmed up) demonstrator I drove.. Exited the dealership and floored it.

Funny thing is, having had one for nearly two years (UKMY99), and now the Integra, I realise that it wasn't really that quick.

It was, though, useable performance. Unlike the Honda which gets wheelspin in third on greasy winter roads

Oh, and I still think it looked cool as F*ck.

Cool

I'd been looking for around a year but never really had anything to push me the final bit of the way.

I had a good knowledge of the cars and have always been a rally fanatic.

Pass my local Subaru dealer on my way to and from work, they had a new (second hand) car in but it was dark and all I could make out when I passed it was that it was a dark coloured Turbo.

Called in on my way home and it turned out to be a Series McRae, this was the first McRae I had seen in the metal and it just had to be mine.
One sleepless week later it was.

This is such a cool thread guys! Thought I'd add my story for the collection.

I never really thought much about imprezas until about 2 years ago after watching colin mcrae throwing his around, and i thought id like one of those, however at the time funds wouldnt permit.
then april last year i started looking into the process of getting one. first one i saw was an import WRX on an L plate, phoned the dealer and booked a test drive. tipped up at the garage and there it was on the forecourt so i decided to have a look around (never seen one close up till then), first thoughts were what a crap interior, looked at the engine and was suprised.... I expected a bigger one. Anyway went into the showroom to introduce myself while some bloke got it ready for a test drive, there i was chatting away then this fecking great burbling roar pulled up outside...."WTF is that"!!....the scooby was ready for me! took it on the road and drove so slow for about a mile due to the build up of fear that I dont even think the turbo kicked in, then it happened, i turned of onto a quiet road dropped into second and floored it.......F*****CK it was so quick, I totally shat my pants

That was it i wanted it, i wanted a Subaru Impreza!

Unfortunately the WRX fell through and i didnt get it, but 2 months later i got a 4 dr UK MY98 turbo and i still get the same adrenilin rush everytime i get in it.

Allthough it isnt as fast i prefer the looks and interior.. and the insurance is a lot cheaper too! my mate drove it recently, fell in love, then within 4 days he got an RB5!!
