Steve, just repeating what simon debanke told me, and I have to say I do believe him as it seems to make sense.
since pressure is force over area, the thing defining the area of the contact patch for a given weight of car is the pressure in the tyres.
A narrower tyre gives you a long contact patch at the same pressure than a wider tyre.
from what I understood he said there was a limit to how much grip a tyre can exert on the road, and it is a trade off between longitudinal and lateral grip. Wide tyres are for cars that need greater lateral grip, but they achieve this at the expense of straightline traction.
If you look, dragsters have big fat tyres when stationery, and run close to atmospheric pressure to increase footprint. when they spin out, the centripetal acceleration causes them to go very very narrow, pressure does increase due to drastic temperature rise, but conatct patch should still be long and thin, which gives great grip!

Steve,
Take a look at a set of WRC snow tyres.....and then tell me how wide they are!!!
They are as thick as I am!!!! (ie NOT)

All these dudes on here talking about sub 10 second 0 - 100's........
I find that hard to believe in a modified scoob.......
I think some people here need to learn how to ensure accurate time keeping..........
When I've had a Vindaloo and 10 pints...the crap coming out of my **** acclereates from 0- 100 in about 2.5 seconds..........beat that if you can!!!

Never done a 0-100 in more than 10 sec's
All datron timed....and its a MK 2 escort not a scoob.
Ok about the tyres, there is a point where its too much but i think you will find its 10psi in 80 series tyres that give you the grip
My mate has 10 wide wheels, i have 7, all the old style rally boys have 9-10 inch rear wheels, so there must be something in that.

Dougy and Speaker.
Try this for me can you.
Get your hands and and grab both ears -hold on tight - now pull REAL REAL hard. OK. Now your heads should be out of your 4sses.
Is that better? Good to smell fresh air isn't it?
Firstly.
Dingys Escort - if you don't believe 0-100 in sub 10 secs - well. Think of this - 410hp and 1000kg. Not gonna be slow is it?
Me. I've done probably 30-40 sub 10 sec 0-100 runs - all Datron or Racelogic timed. In a Scoob. Now I know this is hard for you to believe, but breathe slowly and you'll be OK.
Wake up, smell the roses I think is the expression. As one of you is in Notts, feel free to pop over for a little demo run.
