Always leave my cars in gear as well as handbrake after going out to collect my son from school many years ago only to find the Cosworth was gone!
It had rolled about 40 yards down the road diagonally, mounted the pavement and come to rest (handbrake still full on) against a garden wall, having grazed a tiny amount of paint from the front bumper.
Had it gone any further it would have rolled down the next road and totalled itself against another wall.
One lesson well and truly learned.

I always leave in gear - reverse if facing downhill, 1st if facing uphill.
Always depress the clutch pedal on start up too - reduces the load on the starter motor I believe (hence the reason many manufacturers advise you do so)
