I work 3 shifts so can be leaving or come home in the early hours of the morning, and try hard not to rev the car too hard, not had any one comment on the noise and like it that way as neighbour disputes can easily escalate out of hand, even knock the turbo timer off on nights so the engine can shut off straight after i pull on the drive, just means a tootle home from work,if its avoidable upsetting folk then thats my approach......... but some will always take offence no matter what

My exhaust is very loud, big enough to fit a clenched fist in the back box lol. My neighbours have never complained about it. My office mates always take the **** saying its too loud and im gona get in trouble. The look on their faces when i tell them the cats still in place.

I live in a really small town here in japan, and everyone always tells me either when they saw me, or when they heard me lol.

I would get a resonated center section or backbox bung made, and show him the item.
I would hope that this understanding jesture would please the guy, and he will leave you alone.

A bung might be the best bet as a resonated center section makes a slight difference only.......

I never had any complaints, but then I didnt use the car really early - but in my old house if you left it idling on the drive the porch door would shake, and when my wife was using it I could hear her coming home from about 3 streets away.

You do need to be careful though as if it gets out of hand and the neighbour calls in the council noise people, and it goes on record then you will have to declare the dispute if you want to sell your house, which could cause problems.

Tell the vicar he should be glad you dont own a Ducati with full race pipes like mine - you need to leave them on fast idle for at least 5 minutes to warm up before you ride them, so that would really give him something to complain about.

I get worried about the noise of my car. It's parked underneath the neighbours windows (live in flats) and I'm real careful to get out the car park as quickly and quietly as possible. Still, they must hear it and find it annoying. But not sure what else I can do. Good of them not to complain though.

These things are most annoying (to people inside houses) when just sitting there idling.
I think if you start it up and move off quickly at low revs, they will appreciate it.
If it is there for anylenth on idle - don't be too put out if someone takes "direct action" against what they percieve to be antisocial behaviour.
I wouldn't condone such actions of course.

there used to be a guy a couple of doors down with an import classic scoob he was a taxi driver so he used to come home early hours, and you would swear a helicopter was landing in the street when he insisted on 'cooling his turbo' with his turbotimer, it was that loud. stuff in our house would be vibrating, having said that, it never bugged me, just made me laugh, some of the neighbours were less than impressed though.

The issue is about the noise however my neighbour has said he doesn't care if the noise emissions are less than the legal limit or not, but that I shouldn't be using a car with that level of noise at such an early time of the morning. The arguement got out of hand and nothing was agreed - he just seems adament that I shouldn't use the car, before say 7.30 am! Does anyone know if he has a leg to stand on - especially any of you uniformed lot out there!! Help would be appreciated as I don't think he's going to shut up about this (he is just a control freak)
I had a similar problem to you last year. My garage is underneath the flats I live in. I was putting my car away at 8.45pm one night and my neighbour started shouting and swearing at me out of his window. I couldn't believe it.

I went to see him the next day and he said his entire flat was shaking when I drove into the garage. He lives with his eldery mother who has alzheimers and it was totally freaking her out.
I agreed to do something about it because I really don't like the idea of being a nuisance and I certainly don't want an ASBO or whatever.
I got a resonated centre and a quieter back box. By the time I'd sold my old parts it didn't cost me a fortune, it had no affect on the performance of the car and my neighbour appreciated my efforts and apologised for his behaviour.
Everyone's happy and I can drive my car whenever I want without the disapproving looks I used to get around town.

What? I'd be amazed if there is some daft law stating (sp?) that you can't change your car exhaust

Thankfully my neighbours are cool. But then again, if I am leaving early or coming home later, the bung goes in. Leaving for work the car is idling for 10sec before I move off? Sits idling for maybe 30sec when I come home too. Luckily I live on a hill, so coming home I can roll down for ages, leaving the car to cool, meaning less time on the drive idling.

Then again, when I had the sport I was going out at 2am, to pick up the mrs to bring back to mine, only to be leaving again at 5.30isham, with no bung and a decat, it was loud. But never any complaints

The OP has a milltek exhaust, and they are not loud, certainly not the later models, so I think this is down to the neighbour being overly sensitive and aggresive to boot.

If the neighbour is really going to be a pain they will start to record the events, and present evidence to the council. If the council ever came to listen to a car with a milltek system, I think they would see their time had been wasted!

The best thing you can probably do is to be as quick as possible getting the hell out of there in the morning!
