How terrible for you I would certainly give some thought to Brendan's suggestion of advertising him in the paper as something like "Bird Bashers Builders - We'll beat any price - and your wife!"

We had problems with although not on your scale with neighbours who have since moved. Small-man total-a*hole syndrome: harmless enough, just a general pita.

I think the best way is to simply talk to him, man to man, If he gets abusive and plants one on you a black eye will be OK to see him behind bars for 6 months.
You never know he could be reasonable...

Thanks for asking Suresh. No sign of the dog or the builder. I think he got a fright when he realised I had a witness. His gob got the better of him. He's about but not when I am. Time will tell

Have you thought about talking to somebody from your local council to see bout them making an application for an ASBO under the civil provisions - you and the neighbours will have to make statements and give evidence, which you'll have to do going down the police route too.

If you do manage to get an ASBO, every time he breaches it, he'll be committing a criminal offence and will be hauled before the courts. Here in sheffield, the local judges view breaches of ASBO's very seriously and it doesn't take long before they start sending people for some food courtesy of her majesty's pleasure!!
