I think it needs to be done more often... It's fine for a car enthusiast on a car enthusiasts forum to be able to translate any combination of possible letters and numbers that some prat has spaced, fonted, or drilled illegally. It isnt so for most people.
If the car is seen driving eratically, runs over your child and is witnessed by their friend etc, how are they going to interpret it?

An illegally spaced, drilled or fonted plate is normally a good indication of a person proud of their enormous head genetalia... It is often a guide to a probable lack of indication or desperation for 24/7/365 foglight dazzlement...

If these idiots are so keen to break the law, then the least they can do is contribute to the countrys' coffers to the tune of £30 a time...

They tend to pay little attention in "that London" as there are other things to be getting on with. i.e have you seen how many Krispy Kreme places we have round here now. JOKE!

I do indeed agree that unreadable number plates need dealing with. Saw one just now actually, and even using my extensive knowledge of "chav" had difficulty working it out.

Mis spaced, i.e in a 4-3 format instead of a 3-4..... with the right spaces between characters except for the middle,..... less of a worry, but still I guess not legal. 1 rule for all.

Still you see some very imaginative plates in London, I have another example....

I got a rollocking saturday night, with my plate, all legal lettering just spaced as S1 5CBY instead of S15 CBY, they followed me for about 2 miles before pulling me up on it
Yet I had a police car follow me for 20 minutes on fri and didnt bat an eye lid.

The police on Friday were maybe on there way to a more important place such as the dohnut shop, but I am glad the second lot pulled you as your plate is illegal and there is no reason why you shouldnt be nailed for a traffic offence by a traffic policeperson

yep, as from yesterday there is a new op to crack down on number plates.

All these type of things come from the people upstairs in the offices not the regular police on the street.

Trust me its ****, the bigwigs decide how the bobbies spend there time ie: rather than doing your own cases which have a time limit or locking up people on warrant, patrolling high crime areas, you have to ride on a bus back and forth from town to town to deter bus robberies...pcso's anyone???

Alot of its to do with money and the media (suprise suprise) and yes its stupid that the bigwigs spend all there time and efforts persecuting people with a 'dodgy' numberplate rather than putting more police on the streets catching thieving scumbags and putting them before a court who then give them ****ty little punishments.

I've been pulled numerous times for having a "non regulation" small plate (64mm tall characters instead of 79mm)
I always ask them what the regulation size is according to the 2002 road traffic amendment regulation 14. Usually they don't know. So I just tell them its an import and is subject to regulation 14a. I've never been "done" for my plate yet.


Size and spacing of characters: special cases
14A. - (1) This regulation applies in relation to any vehicle imported into the United Kingdom which -

(a) does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval;

(b) is so constructed that the area available for the fixing of the registration plate precludes the display on the plate of a registration mark in conformity with the requirements of regulation 14.

(2) In relation to a vehicle to which this regulation applies -

(a) each character in the registration mark must be 64 millimetres high;

(b) the width of each character of the mark, other than the letter "I" and the figure "1", must be 44 millimetres;

(c) the width of every part of the stroke forming a character in a mark must be 10 millimetres;

(d) the spacing between any two characters within a group must be 10 millimetres;

(e) the vertical spacing between groups of characters must be 5 millimetres;

(f) the width of a margin between the mark and the top and lateral sides of the registration plate must be not less than 5 millimetres;

(g) the space between the bottom of the mark and the bottom of the registration plate must be not less than 13 millimetres; but, within that space, the space between the bottom of the mark and the top of the name and postcode of the person by whom the plate was supplied must be not less than 5 millimetres."
