Why PS3 will 'win'

I've got a 160gb ipod (and maybe an archos soon), so why do I need to search for a wireless access point and stream media over a dodgy internet connection when I can do it with no dropouts anywhere in the world just by turning on my device (and not having to have hardware running at home 24/7 wasting electricity)?
It's something we in the development world call "feature creep". i.e. something the developers put in because they could do it and thought it was cool without considering whether it's actually useful for anything![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

That reason, for me, is why I didn't buy an Xbox 360, how any company can get away with selling a product with such poor reliability and yet still have so many devout followers is beyond me!

Just because the 360 is unreliable doesn't mean i'd snub it and go out and buy a Snes purely because it's reliable.

But for me it isn't worth having if every few months I have to package it up and send it away, wait up to 3 weeks (sometimes longer) before I can use it again, that's disgraceful.

My missus bought me an X-Box as a surprise Christmas present. Its been faultless so far and a lot of fun.
However if she'd asked me if I'd wanted one for Christmas I would have said no. This decision would have been based on the rrod issues that are to my mind, unacceptably high. If analogies are being thrown around here's mine.
Its a bit like owning a TVR. Lovely to look at, amazing performance but sooner or later its all going to go wrong.
Its an entirely personal decision, a micro indicator of ones patience level, whether thats acceptable or not.

Back in the days of the 3DO there were several manufacturers making 1 console so you did have a choice.

But you have to look at reality. Most users haven't had a problem. I had one RROD on my launch console after nearly 2 years, which I gave to my brother (who got it fixed for free in NZ - pretty good service really) and bought myself an Elite.
The fact is I have had 2+ years of "next generation gaming" with some of the best titles ever seen on a console. Hundreds of hours of pleasure.

There will always be the debate of xBox 360 vs PS3.
Having had both, PS3 all the way for me, just for the blu ray.
What's the point having a full digital TV and watching upscaled dvds ?
Games are currently limited, but patience is a virtue.

p.s. I'll let you know about the PS3. Nearly went down town and paid full whack for one this lunchtime. Really cheesed off with the 360 at the moment...

Admittedly, on close up stuff, the difference isn't as much as you'd like.

I just found this quote on another site talking about the remote psp/ps3 connection, thought it was quite funny.
if remote play is anything to go by you’ll need at least a 512k upstream for it to be really usable and a good wi-fi connection. i have a 2meg cable modem with 256k upstream and find the whole experience choppier than a Belgium ferry crossing in a gale usually.
works great on my home WLAN though.

All becomes clear having just read through the parts of this thread I missed. I thought bob269 and Iain had both a 360 and a PS3 each, but I now realise they are just 360 owners so that explains a lot of the MS fanboy behaviour ![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
I have both machines, the 360 cost me about double what I paid for the PS3 (
) once I bought all the extras but it doesn't offer double the fun.
As for the PS3 Blu Ray player - it gets good reviews across the gadget and home cinema mags I read so thats a real bonus, although I haven't got my HDTV yet as I'm waiting for the new Panny range next month so can't comment yet.
Biggest question remains - GTA is out 29th April, which machine do I buy it for?

and don't get me started about gameplay technical support. Suffice to say, I won't be ordering anything from there again
