It does sound like he was scared by something, maybe someone coming to the door ? Other thought that occured when you mentioned you lived in the middle of nowhere, have you looked round the outside of the house to see if someone has been in the back garden ? A long shot, but if someone was snooping around or trying to break in, then it could have scared the dog.
I'll take them both a long walk when i get back in tonight.
As for someone being on the property, well it could have happened but the cctv or the monitoring sensors would have flagged that up (hopefully)
Good idea though. I will have a check about & see if i can see anything that looks a bit untoward.
Cheers

Something tells me he's had a bad dream or maybe just maybe something like a fox or a cat has caught his eye although he doesnt have any scratch marks around that area.

Stephen, to be fair from what I can gather, you spend lots of time away from them which is never good. How many hours a day do they have quality time with you?
The little lad could be amusing himself and chasing his tale for something to do, or somebody could have told him he's living in Scotland.

Our dog did this when we had him castrated, only for a couple of weeks or so. I put it down to the wound itching. He would lay all quiet and still and then suddenly jump up and turn around as if spooked. I think it is probably the same with your dog. Don't worry it will pass soon enough.

Dogs are odd with the things they get wound up about.
Ours likes to stand on the back of the settee and look out the window, and always barks if it sees the neighbours dogs over the road going out for a walk.
My wife was driving back from the obedience class on monday night, stopped at a junction and the dog started going mad barking. My wife was looking round to see what had upset her, and it was some stone lions someone had outside their house !

I thought this was only typical in collies
.I have 2, 11 month old collies and one of them get's spooked if his stomach rumbles or if he farts. He runs off in the other room.God know's what will happen when I fart in front of him I reckon that will finish him![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

Ours sometimes goes funny when she farts - she looks round to see where the smell came from, then looks accusingly at you.
Not as funny as when shes just had a bath though - she'll shake herself a bit, then get an attack of the zoomies and run round the house from room to room as fast as she can, stopping every now and then to hurl herself on the carpet and rub along it.
