I always do favours for people and never give it a second thought that it might be 'repayable'

I'm the same Village IT helpdesk as a few of you. It all stopped when at an aquaintences house at 23:00 one night, 3 hours into stripping the viruses and removing browser hijackers when told "Righto, off to the birds now, if I leave you a key could you post it when you've finished?".

I said "Sure", waited till he'd gone, pulled the plugout of the wall without powering down and went home.

None since.

This is a very interesting topic, i am definately the type that will help people if i can..... usually car related, as thats what i'm good with, although i now work with a builder, so get asked general diy type favours aswell...

At the start of december, i was asked by a couple, (who use Snet, but won;t read this!) if i could assist with putting the xmas lights on their house, and trust me, there are LOTS! i have a scaffold tower, so the night before, he dropped off his little trailer, in the morning i loaded the tower into the trailer, and then spent ALL day til about 6pm putting lights up....... xmas came and went.... then 1st weekend in jan, i then spent another halfday, same routine with the tower taking the lights down.... i did this as a mate, to help out....

I have since done a quote to fit a kitchen for another of our local Scooby clan, and the guy whos lights they were, has found out about this, he then rang the guy with the kitchen, and not only offered to do all the tiling in the kitchen, (he's a tiler, but 8months ago was driving a van!!) but can you believe he then went on to say to him that he has an 'out of work' carpenter friend who could fit the kitchen if needed..... well, i for one DO NOT think that this is the action of ANY type of friend...... let alone one that will be getting ANY favours off me in the future....

I will add, that i have on several occasions bought his wifes car away and worked on it for her/them, without any kind of financial expectations.... although when i recently changed the headers, she did give me payment for that, even though i didn;t ask for it......

So next time he asks for a favour, the answer will be.... well, 'the favour tree died when you tried to do me out of work'......... tough, find another MUG!!!

Germany is just an intermediate stop gap on my way to the glorious riches the UK has to offer me and my family. Since you're such a nice chap and I need some help....

depends what side of the fence you're standing on i guess

an old 'friend' chipped my old PS1 (i think you could get it done for about £20 back then) in exchange for hanging a door which his brother (a proper chippie ) had built a frame around. you've never seen a more twisted, out of square pile of crap in your life and yep, shocker, the door didn't fit. at all. he got more than his £20 worth there

i think it's the same with anyone who has a trade to be fair.

and we all love those 'it'll only take you 5 minutes' jobs

I must say that I have very little time for anyone who is not prepared to return a favour. Apart from being selfish I regard it as pretty bad manners.

The bloke down the road helped me fit a garage lock as he had a 16mm OD drill bit and a Hiliti drill.

He left my house 6 bottles of Stella better off

There's some psychology involved there. I bet he was happier to receive 6 bottles of stella than if you'd given him £4.50 or whatever...
