My eldest son has Polands Syndrome.
We were lucky enough to meet Jeremy at Euro Disney in the early 90's, and he's sent Paul a christmas card and birthday card every year since.
Ok he could be an annoying ****, but how on earth did his disability have anything to do with that?
Knock it off lads, it isn't funny taking the mick out of the disabled.

I don't actually think he was annoying at all, he was good on most of his TV programmes, game for a laugh was great, I admit Beadles about got a bit boring, but I'd rather see someone like JB presenting a show rather than the ***** we have today like Graham Norton, Alan Carr, Vernon Kay and a big list of other complete *****. JB was a good guy respect to him for sending your lad cards too, how many of the tossers on TV just now would do that?

Polands usually occurs in males and the first indication at birth is webbed fingers. These are usually separated very early on with the help of sking grafts. It is a rare affliction, and most doctors / consultants / plastic surgeons that we come across haven't even heard of it.
There are bigger complications.
There is, usually, a joint deficinecy with Polands. In Pauls case he is missing the centre joint in each finger of his right hand- and can only use it in a claw action.
During the first operation to separate the fingers, they have to use quite a lot of skin from other parts of the body. In Pauls case this was his back, and his backside. He was only a few weeks old.
The grafted skin doesn't grow at the same rate as normal skin. Combined with the lack of finger joints, the developement of the affected hand is massively restricted. In Pauls case this caused his fingers to curl over with the skin being tight, so more operations and grafts. Paul has had the bones in his fingers of the affected hand broken and fused again about six times now- with skin grafts from other parts of his body every time.
Another, often un-noticed, effect of Polands is the lack of a pectoral muscle on one side of the chest. The other side develops normally. The muscles to operate the missing finger joints are also abscent.
The psychological effects, as you can imagine, are massive in most cases. lack of self asteem etc. Some of you may remember some of the 'moments' we've had with Paul over the years. I don't care to remember most of them as he's been to hell and back.
Paul's last operation, at 19 years old, was to have a chest implant (so he no longer looked like his chest had been scooped out on one side) and the removal of muscles from his back and groin, which they've grafted over his chest- in effect, he's 'growing' a pectoral muscle. They have, again, broken his fingers and re-set them to straighten them.
Paul has overcome an awful lot and lives a very normal life- although some small minded people still take the mick out of his disability.

I reckon Beadle would want people to remember / honour him with a smile and a laugh. Some people just seem WAY too happy to put a downer on situations like this - Sorry if that sounds harsh but I think you need to keep your bleeding heart moaning to yourself.

I didn't like him, but the people he wound up made me laugh and anyone who can raise £100 million for good causes has my respect. 59 is no age these days so its a sad day all round both for his family and those chairities that depended on him as he could probably have gone on to raise tens of millions more.

Shame.
Beadle's about was probably one of the original wind up shows. Always missed that show, it had a certain imaginative flair that more modern wind up shows seem to lack.
YBF was/is rubbish though.
And he wasn't a person to walk round with a chip on his shoulder either

sad news, he was very good in his time and i enjoyed watching his programmes with my parents when i was younger especially beadles about. had many laughs watching that. its a big achievment raising £100million for charity, especially when he is ill at the same time.
Just waiting for all the jokes to come flooding in on the phone now.

Shame, couldnt believe it when I heard yesterday, didnt actually realise how ill he actually was. Beadles about was great, there was some cracking wind ups on that program, very original IMO.
As for the jokes, take them as theyre meant, I dont mind them anyway, one of my very good friends suffers from the same disability affecting a foot aswell as his hand, he wouldnt have a problem with the jokes either.

My Wife and I will miss him dearly. He was the funny man who we watched and entertained us with innocent humor. Do you remember the prank with the Alien and the lady....'do you want a cup of tea'?
I also admire the man, who helped thousands of people with his good charity work.
59 is such a young age and he suffered a lot considering his illness. I hope he died with a smile on his face.

THey had a snippet of him on the radio this morning released by his agent, he was saying that he used to get a lot of people coming up to him saying they didnt really like him on the TV, but that he was a nice bloke

Showing my age here...but what was that programme he did with Lenny Henry, the guy from Stars in your Eyes and a woman? Sad to see anyone go so young...my folks were 53 and 56 so hope his family aren't suffering too much.
