I always bid at the last minute, that is the whole point of an auction highest bidder wins Just the other day I won a gearbox for my WRX.

If you don't like the rules don't play the game.

Agreed mate. Had a similar thing, waited til about 20 secs left, went to bid then found out I hadn't signed in

Anyway, enough of this thread, I'm off out

its common knowledge that the main bids come in, in the dying seconds !! its like normal auctions. If we agreed on the price 3 days before the dying bid it wouldn't be an auction

When i bid i set the max amount i am prepared to pay and leave it. I log 5 mins after the auction has finished and if i've won great if not i look for another item, most items are on multiple times anyway.

I suspect some people get carried away with the auction and end up paying more for an item than its actually worth simply because they enter a bidding war with another member.

its full of tricks ebay, how about when you get outbid then half an hour later you get a second chance offer because you were being bid up by the seller

That's exactly the point of sniping, it has many advantages and NO disadvantages (other than not leaving you time to bid again if you end out beaten, but that's a good thing in my book, it removes the impulse and temptation).

It prevents others nibbling away at your max bid until they either beat you or give up. Whichever of these two behaviours they follow, if you put in your max bid too early you're worse off. If you stayed out of it, assuming they're a novice Ebayer to be nibbling like that they'd put in a low bid and sit back thinking they were winning. The sniper comes in with seconds to go and bang, "what the hell happened", no time for others to try and outbid them. You won't beat a fellow sniper with a higher bid, but you will often pay less than your maximum if you do win it.

Why show your hand early to allow others to cause you to pay more or beat you, just to be honourable?!

Am i getting this right? your throwing your toys out the pram because you got outbid a the last minute If you did't bid 2days before it ended you might not have bumped the item up that high at the end

Sniping is great as you put in your bid and then you don't show your hand till the end !!! If you loose then that's fine as you shouldn't leave it till the end

i never bid on an item until the last day anyways,as im only raising the price that it may go for..... f im at work when it ends then ill put a bid in and hope its big enough to win it,if not then so be it,im not prepaired to go higher than what i think its worth,if im around when it ends ill wait until the last 20 seconds and start to place my bid, leaves me no time to place a second one if its not high enough, but again thats the amount im willing to go to,so again no big deal..... auctions are set for a certain date and thats set out in the listing,be it one day seven days ten days etc..... you cant win an auction with 2 days remaining.........

Why worry there will be another similer item for sale soon and you now know approximately the going rate. The trick is assessing the items which appear superficially not as attractive as the others then e-mailing the seller with the searching questions which wil establish that his item is a bargain which others have missed. Don't get emotionally attatched to any item. Put your max bid in and leave it but be realistic on value( add 5% to what you think and only bid if it is still a bargain ) and the value of your time, understand that large numbers of attractive photos and flowery prose describing items will always attract interest and so avoid.
Avoid all this last second bollox though, the above should get out more!
Some you win and some you lose but take control, you set the price, the skill is to accurrately value what you are bidding on.

love last second bid. its an auction at end of day. buy it now normally better. when i sell i put it on there for few days that way people get interest and watch it. then bid against each other. pointless for 5 mins as who's going to see it?
watched a carbon fibre bonnet with buy it now£300 not get touched then relisted as auction and went for £50 +£50 postage crazy

I still don't get the point of sniping . The person who bids first will win unless you are prepared to pay more than them, in which case you didn't get the item because you sniped, but because you were willing to pay more. Might make you feel warm and fuzzy because you think you've pulled a fast one, but you're only kidding yourselves.

you dont get it, the person who bids first or whatever will not have time to think about going higher than he/she first bid, hense the sniper will win for the lowest possible price, in the last seconds of the auction,

sniping only works a treat because of people like you and the op,

cheers
