The thing is, ebay is now geared towards a late flurry of action. Their "maximum bid" function means that if you bid normally, auction style, anybody using the automatic bid function will outbid you the instant you bid. So there's no point waiting until the very dying seconds to make a single bid that's only a bit higher than the current winning bid because someone may automatically outbid you in this way. The ONLY way to play it now is to put down the MAXIMUM you are willing to pay, allow ebay to bid automatically for you and take your chances. You only pay the amount that it takes to win the item so there's no risk of paying more than you wanted to. Moaning about sniping just shows that you don't understand how ebay works very well. HTH.

I just posted on the other thread
I only bid the maximum I am prepared to pay for an item and leave it at that, if I lose I lose, if I win, bargain
If an auction is going to end and im not around then I stick my maximum in and leave it

you dont get it, the person who bids first or whatever will not have time to think about going higher than he/she first bid, hense the sniper will win for the lowest possible price, in the last seconds of the auction,
sniping only works a treat because of people like you and the op,
cheers

Taffy, I think you're missing the point, I've already put my highest bid in, I don't want to get involved in bidding again, if I get the item great, if not there'll be another along in a minute. You're confusing outbidding someone, with outfoxing them.

i've just skimmed thru this so forgive me if i've missed the wind up, but WTF is the poster going on about??
has he missed the whole point of auctions and ebay? you win a normal auction by outbidding, ebay have to put a time limit on for obvious reasons hence you get sniping.
2 ways to use ebay, have a budget, put on your highest bid and walk away. or sit there with a stopwatch i use both options, it just depends what i want to win.
sniping is fun i'll often mess about with ps2 games and try to bid with 1 sec left, if i get it, great. if i leave it too late, so what!

whoooo hoooo iv just won a garage door for £10.51p. That too was a single bid of a sniper shot! lat 7 seconds, i would have paid upto £25 for it though
So Siraf, do you agree with lastminute.com?
or should everyone book 6 months so they dont get a bargain. Its the way of the world, everyone loves a bargain.

Unfortunately, the way you're posting makes you come across as some 17yr old, be that the case or not. So you don't like the way eBay works, don't use it then, simple as

LOL I've been buying and selling on ebay for 9 years. Now I know all the secrets to winning auctions or getting the best price if you're selling and it's pretty obvious stuff if you think about it e.g. you're never doing yourself a favour by showing your hand early when buying or having your listing end at 8:45 Monday morning if you're selling :-) At the end of the day, it's an auction site. If you don't want to take a chance on selling your stuff for less than you want, or buying stuff for much more than you should have spent, go down the shops instead, or look in the paper.
The days of genuine bargains on ebay are long gone. Perhaps once a month I'll pick up something at a decent price which has been missed by others. But it's not very often. I think of it now just as a shopfront, a way I can get stuff delivered to my door that I don't have the time to go and find in the shops.
