Well, a hell of lot more than anything with VTEC (except NSX ) or with a Turbo caught off-boost.

So, progressive torque curve would be a better description.
Yes deffo agree.
I've just been running in the new Brembo discs & Greenstuff pads on mine.
Standard stoppers really don't get much better than this.

you say they get rave reviews from people who had saxo VTR's. i used to have a 106 GTI before my impreza, test drove a clio 172, and a cup 172. diddnt like either of them. i don't think they felt as fun as the 106 by far. so thought id go broke an get the scoob

One of my mates got one of these about a year ago and I get the feeling he's not massively impressed.

Having been in it the performance is really nothing special at all, and obviously you've got the cheap and tacky French interior to put up with - however the seats were good.

If you're on a tight budget and want a cheap hot hatch then maybe they make sense, but otherwise I wouldn't bother.

It's all relative. If you're used to a 300bhp 4wd rally monster of course it's going to feel slow. However as a fwd n/a hot hatch it's great fun and very capable although having owned a 182 myself and a Saxo VTS I have to say I MUCH preferred the Saxo. More fun to drive and faster than the Clio when it was tuned a bit (160bhp can be had for about 1000 - 1500), almost as fast standard to be fair. A 1*2 doesn't respond that well to light tuning mods.
