Agreed a dog may alert you to something wrong bit in the time it takes to wake up, assess the situation, decdie to call, to alert plod and them respond - who knows what could happen...
in 10-30 secs they could be in you house and in your face and you awakening from a deep sleep.

It's also a right ballache having to get a car out of a garage unless you have a big garage with leccy doors.

Also depends what sort of garage you have. My 205 lives in the garage, but it only just fits as we have a crappy little lean to garage, so anything bigger and I would struggle to fit it in there

I do have a big garage with leccy doors. That's another thing one of the remotes was on the keyring so I am waiting in on the guy comming to deactivate it.
I had the Police on the phone and they have a suspect from the area the car was found. They are driving the route and going to check for CCTV evidence.

ironically, these days, it is safer to park your car away from your house, (if you cannot use or do not have a garage), as your oppurtunist key thief will have no idea which house to break into, obviously a pro looking for a car to order will put a bit more effort into his scumbaggery......as for the dog deterrent, again this will defeat your oppurtunist, but a pro may think the reward is greater than the risk....i too keep my keys downstairs in an open position, as my wife and children are far far more important to me than my car, and if there is a pondscum in my house, i want him out again as quickly as possible....

Sorry les but NO, this is not good advice, not in 2008 and NL's lawless britian not it is not, not if you value your safety and that of your families.
gone are the days of safe in your own home.
Crooks and robbers armed with knives and guns, eapecially pro's knicking 50k cars or druggies are not necessarily going to ask nicely!
best to leave keys in the kitchen/downsatirs so they do not need to come up to get them. Not fair or right i know but best in the long run
Les, chances are it is not going to be a one on one stand up fight between an angry car owner and a crook in a striped top with a swag bag over his shoulders!
3-4 armed blokes giving your wife a slap whilst demanding the keys is far, far worse than them breaking in and taking them from the hall/kitchen.
does not matter how hard you are or think you are, best let them take it is is only a car.
Better to have proper poilcing and seriously long sentences doing hard labour for the perpetraitors.

I whole heartedly agree with your last sentence.
