Want an 850+bhp 210mph sprint engine, no problem. Want it to last 50,000 miles being thrashed every day ? Different task !
Its a risky business rating mappers on a peak power output, thats the easy bit. Optimising the driving smoothness and flexibility takes a bit more time. Ensuring long term reliability comes with years of experience at different power levels.
We are all still learning something virtually every time we map a car.

trouble is for every person that gets it, there's about 5 others that will post up 'that mapper is crap coz my mate got 20 bhp more with blah'
i'll stick my neck out here, who's the best mapper? no-one. but there's plenty of very good one's

A shootout would be completely pointless because it doesnt consider engine safety or long term life of it.
How many of you would be happy to have your car mapped for absolute power for it to last 1 week or less? or have you car produce a huge top end bhp figure but be a pig to drive ?
There is way more to mapping than the peak PubTalk figures as Andy says.

Totally agree, Bob R Swindon, very respected mapper, don't give you bull and doesn't rip you off and most importantly gets your car running sweet! Only trouble is you keep getting feeling "must visit Bob again", not because he's surrounded by MCN girls or anything, just more of his magic.

indeed. I vaguely remember trying to walk back from a restaurant and boat cruise to the hotel a few years back, wandering for about an hour before I flagged down a taxi and slurred to him to take me to xyz hotel. 100 yards later we were there ![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Also used to compete at the Mountain Bike World Cup down there too - awesome venue

Vote for Andy F.
When mapping my car last Andy realised the power was a bit lower than expected because the wastegate pipe which I had had replaced elsewhere was too small. He fitted a replacement immediately, we went out again and the power was indeed up !

i would have to say Simon www.JollyGreenMonster.com - Engine management specialist gets my vote if not just for being an excellent mapper but a thoroughly top bloke have called on him many times for advice!
however this is not to say the other top name tuners are not as good, just simon fitted in with my schedule and i am biased as i have only used simon todate and hope to continue doing so

what would be interesting would be a poll of how many people have their car remapped by a second mapper due to not being happy with the original.
I have heard to many times that the above is happenng but due to the cult following some business's have is never make public
should say i am one of those people and Bob Rawles sorted my problems after far to many visits to my original mapper
I can't comment on who is the best mapper but Bob's stength is he makes you fully aware of what is happening at all times with an after sales service that is second to none, I guess only mapping a small amount of cars (in comparion) a week helps this

I would now only use Bob myself. I dont get much time to drive as i would like, but boy when i do (like tonight!lol), do i bloody love it.
my midrange torque now feels superb, and jees its so damn good!
Ok before, it was ok, i was not overly impressed i really wasnt.
Now i am well impressed. I finally have from my car what i should have had in 2006 when i first had this load of work done.
Again, to be fair to Mr Bulmar, i just think he was far too conservative with the mapping, and as such just didnt get it where it should have been.
And as Andy F said above, you DO have to think about reliability and longevity. My car is my daily drive and only car and always will be.
Hence my 71k miles! LOL.

Ive had my car mapped twice by different mappers, both highly respected both did a good job, but I have found both to be be a little, lets say difficult to communicate with, withdrawn. It might be me but I like to know whats going on, detailed info, albeit in laymans language.

I have used 6 or 7 different people to map my car in the time I have had impreza's and each time the car was mapped I was usually happy with it!! The mapping will be more down to personal preference as most cars have different mods so obviously a different outcome on the mapping side

I've decided to go with Alan Jeffery ,He's fairly close to me and he doesn't seem to have had any bad press .Got my Scoob booked in on Tuesday so I'll let you all know how it goes.....good or bad
Hopefully Good
It seemed that there was alot of praise for alot of mappers and only a few people have had bad experiences, so hopefully I will be reporting back some good news on Tuesday....albeit with a lighter wallet
