Even though its exhausting, I have come to the conclusion that I love doing it. The sense of purpose is only matched by the sense of acheivement when it comes to the end.

After parking the car and exchanging a mutual yet non verbal communication of gratitude for getting each other back home safely, its inside for a post stage beer then off to bed. Exhaustion means I'm asleep as soon as I lie down.

Here's to driving through the night. A more fulfilling experience than you might imagine

I'm doing one tonight: Scunny to Dover via Letchworth, (to pick up something I've bought off e-bay), then Calais to south of Limoges overnight. Around 750 miles total. The Mrs will sleep for most of it

I tend to nap on and off all day to make it easier to keep awake, but occasionally have had a half-hour's kip on a French motorway services.

The worst time ALWAYS seems to be around dawn. Dark is OK, daylight is OK, dawn, for some reason, and I'm nodding

tell me more about this scumball rhod
Its a charity rally i've done over the past three years and am doing this year. Its great fun and so far i've raised over 1500 quid for various children's charities. Search on here for 'scumball' and you should find the reports i've done of the previous two years events. Also search my name and scumball on youtube and you'll find the telly programme we appeared on for the first year.

Rhod, I know this because I did it with you this year..... The only reason that you got into Dijon is because I helped you up (more than once) and guided you there on the long walk in!

I asked about the car; is it the Omega from last year?

i drive from portsmouth to stranraer ferry and belfast quite a lot.always at night.hardly any muppets around quiet roads and driving like it was in the good old days.those trucks with their muilti coloured lights are like ghostly galleons cruising the motorways and the night staff in service areas are special!!! love it

Doubt it..lol!! You can bet someone here has done further, longer and faster..lol!! I did a similar route to your mate's second half a little while back. Platja D'Aro in Spain to Calais in ten and a half hours in an 03 WRX. No overheating, no aching back, but lots of petrol..!! Had breakfast in Spain and a night time snack at home. That's the beauty of living in Dover..lol!!!

Reminds me of a time about 12 years ago coming along the M62 at about 4am. Somehow I ended up in a line of about 6 cars all doing significantly more than 69mpg, but all driving very well. Keeping left, signaling to pull out and in, safe distance etc. A plod must have watched us for a minute or two before taking a run up to teach us our lesson. He must have been flat out in his Omega 24V as he passed us all with his matrix sign spelling out 'SLOW DOWN' at the back 6 engines suddenly dropped into over-run as we all clocked our speedos and muttered 'Oops'

Done several night trips

Porchester (hants) to Saarloius in Germany

several runs up and down the uk whilst attending race meetings, Its amazing how peaceful it is on the motorways after midnight

and we did a nice run from Home to Helensburgh, at the beginning of the month, went up the west side, and back down the east

1500 miles in 3 days

I will have drive Windydaughter up to Belfast Airport at the end of the month, not really a long drive, about 60 miles round trip, but I have to be at the airport for 3am and her flight is supposed to leave at 5pm, so no doubt when I'm driving back it will be getting light. Not really a long drive through the night but I will be driving at night on empty roads and returning home at dawn.
