Toothache

The receptionist will not be 'dishing out' prescriptions. I would assume that Scooblou is known at her dental practice and her problems with an impacted wisdom tooth are known too. Rather than make her wait the dentist will issue a prescription for a known problem and see her when the swelling goes down. The more worrying thing is that the swelling has not gone down and the prescription nearly finished. As Aaquil said 24-48 hours should see improvement and if it is not happening then the dentist would usually change the prescription or double up with another antibiotic alongside to 'hit it hard'.
The hot/warm salt water mouth rinses are also meant to help - although are totally REVOLTING.
Call them again for advice tomorrow morning SL.

I now have a flap of skin over the one which is causing me problems so probably got some food stuck which has caused an infection.
I'm going back in the morning so hopefully I will get some more Antibotics and then discuss with my dentist about having the offending tooth removed.
I've had aload of whisky so feeling quite numb at the mo

"Lie down"..... it's a flaming tooth ache, you're not recovering from major surgery woman.... now I'm sure your time would be better spent hoovering or dusting the house rather than having a "lie down" and watching "loose women" or whatever it's called

God my sympathies r:e toothache, had to see dentist on Mon last week as had severe toothache, as im 37 weeks pregnant and need an xray to remove a root that has grown through they cannot do anything for me till i have had little one. I had an infection in my gum which was causing my face to swell too so they could only give me erthyromicyn 250mg, along with taking paracetamol every 4 hours which would take 48 hours to kick in, nothing seemed to be helping me with the pain (gargling salt water, oil of cloves, bonjela)nothing relieved the pain, i went to the chemist and brought a tiny tube of oraljel, put a pea sized ammount onto my gum and omg bliss........... within 2 hours it has made the pain ease off enough for me to get some sleep, highly recommend buying some...

Listen...a lot of reception staff are actually fully qualified dental nurses and where I work they usually ring up to the dentist and ask. We look at the history and according to the description on the phone we will either get the patient in or prescribe and get them in asap...this is usually when we are 'chock a block'.
Keep up the warm salt water after you have anything to eat and a cold compress...hope you get better soon.

Glad to hear you have some more tablets ScoobLou. Hopefully these will hit the spot and give you some relief. I have never had toothache but years of being married to a dentist(now my ex) and working in the practice I have seen many in pain and it really drags you down.
Nice to hear from aaquil that similar practises occur in other practices.

The majority of cases you will defo see a patient having pain but if your appointment book is SOOOOOOOOOO full and you cannot get that person with toothache in it is either see them (1) the next day (2) provide a prescription based on a clear previous history e.g. wisdom tooth problems (recurrent).
I am sure that ALL dentists have had to do it at one time or another.
Anyway how is our poorly person doing?

Its my lower right wisdom tooth. I have an annoying flap of skin where its trying to push through, it feels like an ulcer in that area and obviously I get the throbing pain. My cheek, lower jaw and neck feels bruised like someone has thumped me.
Apart from the above I'm fitting fit.

Do not eat anything that could get stuck between the flap and the tooth. Keep up the hot salt water and flush it around really strongly that is to flush the bacteria/food out. Keep using a cold compress - Packet of frozen peas make sure you put a cloth or kitchen towel between your face and the frozen packet.
