tdo4 turbo you don't really just want to fit a dawes device as that is only masking the problem , the ecu is in the passenger footwell have a look and see if it has three plugs into it or four i think pre 96 were four plugs like my 93 wrx and can be re-mapped with a piggy back board 97 -98 i still think can't be chipped or remapped . as yours was registered jan 97 it may be a 4 plug pre 96 ecu and this can be modded if so remove the ecu remove the cover and look to see if resistor j1 has been cut and a daughter board plugged into the ecu , if 3 plug 97 ecu it can't be remapped therefore something else is raising your boost either dawes device or bleed valve fitted somewhere or some other electronic device tricking you map sensor. or a faulty boost soleneoid ? Keep going you will sort it eventually sounds like previous owner has fiddled with something .

could it have been chipped, where is the ecu and would i be able to check it myself??? any pictures of a standard ecu would be welcomed or a chipped one so as to compare mine and advice as to where its location is.

Been reading a bit about dawes systems how much to fit one and would this enable me to reduce the boost to what it should be without any ill effects on the engine??? or can i reduce the boost without one? other than this problem the car is fine.....so its annoying me a bit but i will not be beaten lol.

another question, Is there a difference with the my96 and my97 models as mine was first registered in jan 97 would this model have the td04 or td05 turbo?

excuse my vague knowlege but this site is helping immensly.
Here you go, this is a early 4 plug un-chipped ECU with the spare socket bottom right hand corner. Hth

Is the brass restrictor still located in the boost solenoid pipe work as some people remove it or drill it out to a larger size to raise boost not sure what size hole it is meant to be .

https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...s-how-fix.html

Identical problem i definately think it is fuel cut i had to clean my solenoid several times best way is to do the plugs under the steering wheel for fault testing so the solenoid then starts operating repeatedly then spray brake cleaner or wd40 into the ports on the solenoid this will flush any rubbish out as it repeatedly operates , reconnect up pipes ,unplug leeds and try again it is a common problem

this thread about resistor size

https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...ctor-size.html

hope this helps

The brass restrictor is there, what i think im gonna do is get a series of drills and check the bore size of the restrictor just to be certain it hasnt been drilled out, if it has replace it.

gonna give solenoid another clean out

looks like i may have to get another solenoid just to eliminate it from the equation, if anyone has one for sale would you let me know.
