As usual this is only really going to hit torrent users due to fact that they upload the material which is worse than downloading it I'm happy with my newsgroups. In fact it was the reason I stopped using torrents years ago

Proxyswitcher, can you really be arsed, save a few quid on a DVD and spend all your spare time fannying about with electronic counter measures to put the authrities off your activities.

Just borrow stuff like I do.....

In fact all you download from the newsgroups is a bunch of binary text files.

It's the program on your pc which reverts it back to the original dvd, game etc

What I was trying to say was when you upload something to a newsgroup you're simply storing binary text files.

If I remember correctly, and correct me if I'm wrong, a DVD on a newsgroup may consist of 50 RAR files but what's actually stored on the newsgroup server is a bunch of text files.

Hence the phrase 'binary newsgroups' and why the group names begin alt.binaries

e.g alt.binaries.dvd

Sadly I think thats just a technicality and they will find some way to get to it .. there is a new version of BT that blocks IP address so maybe that could be the future ?

I think you'll find torrents will much be easier for them to clamp down on than newsgroups are.

I'm sure the time will come for us newsgroup downloaders but, for now at least, I think we're safe!!

I don't disagree ... but 90% of the newsgroup "collection" is borrowed from the groups that supply torrents.

Research the names of the releasing crackers most or torrent boys.. Kill one you kill the other.

I think I'd be willing to wager that the torrents appear once they've been sourced from the newsgroups.... not the other way round.

Releases such as prison break etc always hit Torrents minutes after they have aired in US, but take hours even days for Newsgroups

Thats based on Giganews access and provate trackers

Well I think the reason for that should be pretty straightforward -these things have to completely uploaded to a newsgroup before they're published, that takes a little time.

Torrents on the other hand don't.

that doesn't explain how they are sourced from Newsgroups in the first place ??

How can something have come from newsgroups if its on torrents before newsgroups... even if its only one person seeding

Surley it is not illegal to download any type of torrent etc. Would they not have to prove that you actually used the software. You are not breking any copyright laws just by downloading a copy of the software.

"Your honour, yes, I did download the game, felt guilty about the whole thing and deleted it immediatley before using the sofware. Please feel free to prove otherwise"

If you download a torrent you are then uploading it to others and thats where they get you The uploading bit is far more serious than the downloading.

The hierarchy is:

Releasegroups
Topsites
FXP Boards
IRC Trading
Newsgroups
Peer-To-Peer

Torrents make it easy for noobs to get access, they are bottom of the food chain. Easy pickings for people like the RIAA and BPI and always will be.

Cool

I don't see why Newsgroups would any less 'illegal' than torrents? Surely the crime is distributing/receiving copyrighted stuff. The format is irrelevant?

Am I missing something?

With p2p you are redistributing, with Newsgroups you are not. Doesn't make it right or any better, but p2p users will be first in the firing line.

Use peer guardian 2. it stops you downloading from spying websites that report p2p.

On my log i have cambridge uni, safenet inc, all the anti p2p sites, humberside police station?, and loads of other randoms that you wouldnt want knowing you get stuff from p2p!

Makes downloads slower but alot safer!
