Would you send an £850 postal order to pay for an ebay item ?

And the SN Ebay paranoid states takes a HUGE leap forward!!!
I just sold an item for £1850, the buyer only had 3 feedback so I asked for a wire transfer (he's in Austria) and with 48 hours the cash was in my bank and 24 hours after that (Parcelforce Data Post + Insurance) the item was in his possession!!
You can be TOO paranoid about these things![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)

Depending on your viewpoint
He (the Austrian) had to 'trust me' in order to send 2K by wire..... he did, and his reward was a bargain
So not EVERYONE is a rip off.... just a small few, and if you do a small bit of research first it should save a lot of heartache later....

You make a fair point, but it does require a lot of trust and one of the things the thread threw up was the OP might have got a better deal on a brand new computer anyway.
For me and for that money, I'd want to see the whites of the seller's eyes.

Like i said earlier in the thread, because the seller only had an 11 rating and one iffy feedback already i asked them to send me some photos of the actual item to my email address as they were using a stock photo, that was 3 days ago and still nothing.
The laptop they are selling is worth £1500-£1800 and i could of had it for £750 after they originally rejected the offer i put forward and them came back to me the next day to say they have had a rethink and £750 would be fine. At this point this is when i sent them a message through ebay saying that the £750 offer would be coniditional on them sending me some photos of the actual item to my email address, 3 days later and nothing.
If they had of sent some photos i would have asked them to change the auction to £750 buy it now so everything was kept through ebay and i would have bought it.
This was the item btw, as you can see they are using a stock photo and one bad feedback so far from just an 11 rating.

Looking at the listing I would say it smells of a scam - stock photos, stock description and the seller wants a PO sent quickly as they are going away ???
Seller is also selling loads of boots, again with stock photos but their account is a personal one, not business, and they want PO's or bankers draft for payment.
Looking at their account history they have also sold a couple of mobiles recently.
I would say its either a scam, or someone selling stolen goods.
It may well be a genuine seller, but if that is the case they should learn how to make legit looking listings.
In this case I wouldnt touch it with a bargepole. Buying laptops on Ebay is always a gamble unless you go to a seller who has proven feedback and is obviously a business, and the risk isnt worth it.

The other thing that I pointed out to the OP is that the feedback (bar one) is all over 12 months ago, and now suddenly they have 22 items listed for sale
They may well be going away, but will they actually be coming back ?
Also I assume they know the full value of the Laptop and would certainly try and sell it for minimum of a grand if it is indeed theirs and brand new still sealed in the box
There is absolutely no excuse these days for not being able to produce a photograph of the goods, almost everyone has a mobile phone, and I bet at least 2 out of 3 of them have cameras
I have sold electrical goods (8 track recorder) and been asked to provide very close up shots of the heads, to which I did and this ended up with an instant buy it now on the item

The original item is back up for sale with a new description underneath, they want paying by Friday before they go away, Hmmm
Somebody won the original auction but the description says they couldn`t pay in time so its been relisted, considering the original auction ended on monday it seems a bit odd that someone couldn`t get a postal order or bankers draught to them by thurs/friday.

It looks like i had a lucky escape here, since i showed interest in this auction the seller has had 2 straight negative feednacks left against their name for items that have been paid for but not recieved. The buyer of the laptop hasn`t as yet left any feedback either so it doesn`t look like they have recieved anything either.
Ive noticed a bit of a ring that seems to appear on laptop auctions, the same names keep appearing whether they are buyers or sellers. Its as if the same users have multiple accounts and they rate each username or they have other friends that they rate, its a well dodgy place for things like laptops.
Scroll up 3 posts for the original link to the auction.

Someone else left negative feedback yesterday, it certainly was a close escape as i almost parted with £750 to that seller.
These are the last 3 feedbacks that have been left for that seller.
SCAMMER AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE
Paid money next day boots still not arrived and no communication WARNING!!

Itsd quite common for scammers to build up good feedback but if you look carefully you will often find the same phrases used time and time again or feedback form the same buyers and sellers or form accounts created at the same time.
If buying anything like this I always ask to pay cash on collection and ask for a receipt to be provided. If they decline both simply won;t bid.
Laptops are the most likely item bought fraudulantly. We normally just in my small team of 20 people have 10-20 units a day people try and scam us with. Luckily we catch nearly all of them and report them to the police.
Glad you didn't get stung
