In honesty, all a vet would likely do is make sure there is no excess bleeding, few shots"just incase" quick visual check, £80 please then send her off and say to keep an eye on her and come back if it gets worse.
They aren't magic instant healing doctors who have magical CT scanners at their disposal that can somehow see down a dog's gob to see if there is any internal tissue damage.

Threw a stick for her at the lake and it stuck in the ground like a spear - just as she grabbed it with her mouth.
It was pushed down her throat, she was running around squealing and pawwing at her mouth - she snapped the stick in half as I was trying to catch her!
Then she chewed another chunk off while trying to get it out .... by the time I reached her and opened her mouth I could just see the top of the stick at the back of her tongue!!!!
I was trying to hold her mouth open and pull the stick out but couldn't do both - the wife reached me atthis point so I held the dogs mouth open while the wife tried to get the stick out ..... there was a lot of blood!!
Finally after a frantic 5 minutes the stick came out - covered in blood - the dog looked shocked and unsteady on her feet ...... but then, 10 minutes later, she was running around and swimming like normal .....

Got home and put her food out, it's too painful for her to eat and she has left it ..... I have given her a parecetamol (sp?) and she has settled a bit.
She is dribbling some blood and doesn't look too good ... her breathing is fine and she just seems sad for herself.
Will see what tomorrow brings ... I'm a bit worried

Hope all goes well!

Everyone and their dog (except seemingly you and yours) knows you dont throw sticks for dog for this exact reason!
I hope your dog is ok, but for the sake of a tenner and possibly your dogs life go and get a throw toy and take it with you on your walks.
If you have a big dog and you throw a tennis/rubber ball then change it for one with a rope attached.
This goes for everyone, dont just say oh it'll never happen to me!

Well done mate...
I think in the light of the Oscars, it deserves an acceptance speech!
Back to the dog, I dont think a trip to the vets is a bad thing. I took Tuvaaq when he hit his hip, cost about £110 but was worth having him looked at and treated, the little they did.
Main thing now is it looks like his dog is ok now, hope so anyway. But possibly worth getting looked at to check there is nothing left. No more stick throwing eh

Contacted the Vet just now.
She was concerned that we got all the stick out - which we did, the stick was simply too big to have left anything behind.
The dibbling a small amount of blood wasn't a worry to the vet - but, she said, it's our call whether we want to call her out top open the surgery.

Whoops, didnt know this was a well known problem, whenever I have taken my mates dog for a walk, I have always thrown sticks for her to fetch. I thought thats what you just did with dogs, also the tennis ball
Dont think I will be doing that again

Thats a frightening story Pete, thank goodness the remaining piece of stick came out. In all honesty I think it is advisable to let the Vet have a look at her.
Can't understand why some people have to be so rude though!

I don't throw anything heavy enough to stick in the ground but that's only cause my dogs stupid enough to get hit by it

Dog seems sorry for herself this morning, she went for her morning walk and has just been out for her lunchtime walk.
She still won't eat - that doesn't worry me, yet.
It's the fact that she won't drink which is more of a concern to me.
She did drink a lot of lake water yesterday chasing my R/C SpeedBoat .. this was after the event!
I am taking her to the Vets at 5:20pm this evening ..... I want her to get some fluids in her - I don't think there is any piece of stick still in her windpipe as the stick was large in diameter and not one which splinters.
We have a dog toy with rope that we throw - but, for swimming in the lake we throw a stick in - she loves swimming.
She seems so sad for herself ...... and a man and his dog is a powerful bond. I'll keep you posted, it's a real shame that some posters had to be so rude ......
