Aaaarrrggh, you guys have proper freaked me out, lol. I've got a double whammy at the mo it seems, my big toes started hurting loads recently. Think I'll have to try that cutting a V thing before it gets to the state of what was in that pic
I cut my nails in the apparently correct fashion as well but it's still happening, who the heck designed these things, mine are faulty
Cheers for the bizarrely helpful info that I didn't think I would find on here

Bejeezus im to be thankful for small mercies by the sounds of all this
I have heard of the condition before but couldnt figure out exactly what happens.
I ve been spared it seems by clipping the ol trotters once a month and avoiding the temptation to wear high heels
IS that it ?

One of my big toes went like this, I had a good dig around at it and messed it up a bit. A day or so later I nelt down and as I did so managed to snag my toe nail on the floor (bare foot) which bent and quickly snapped my nail half way down my toe. Sat there and pulled the nail off from half way down which got rid of the ingrowing bit nicely too
It's my finger nails which I find quite strange. If I damage them they seeem to split. My mum shut my thumb in the door when I was a toddler, my nail came off and grew back with a split right down the middle and has been like it for my whole life, just sort of grows back in 2 halves almost and 2 layers.
I tried 'removing' my thumb nail myself a few years back as I'd heard the doc could do this and it'd grow back ok. Few beers later I set to work, only managed half of it and gave up with one side missing (split down the middle)
I also fell out of a tree when I was about 12 and caught my finger between 2 branches and the nail area took my weight for a second as it was trapped (before it unsnagged and I fell into a pond below lol) The nail didn't come off this time but after a while it started to get ripples in it as it grew and a few years later it split (like my thumb) and it's got 2 layers and a split more on the side. The split now goes right down to my cuticle.

I'll have no problems with ingrowing nails for a bit.
After a long run a few months back my big toe nail started to hurt.
It seems it was a bit too long and was rubbing up and down in my trainer.
Anyway, last night in bed I caught it in the sheet and it pulled up on one side so I did my own little operation and gently teased the other side off and Hey Presto! I've now got a big toe nail sitting on my alarm clock, and a new nail starting to grow

As someone else has said there is just quite a small pointy piece of nail on the painful side of your toe and if you can nip that off most of the pain will go.
You should cut your toe nails straight across.
To recover this one, cut a V in the centre as this lets the nail flex. Then three times or four times a day, bathe the foot in warm salty water for 5 minutes and dry well and carefully before putting some Savlon on the cut.
If after 3 days this is not looking a lot better go straight to the doc.
