Andy van driving jobs don't pay well, unless you do silly hours.....
I speak as a fellow FLT licence holder !
I can't hack nights and rotatingshifts at my age anymore so got a"cushy" number that's bearable.... just !

Good luck with the job hunting !

You will be grilled and as typical dirty tricks campaign will be waged against you, so for once you need to stop the whole "I'm just an honest bloke looking for ....." line and stop being so 'open' with them, all company requested 1:1 discussions should (from now on) involve a union rep and think of it more like a police interview where there trying to lead you into 'confessing' to a crime you didn't commit.

and for **** sake DON'T mention that you spend all your spare time drawing.... as that's what they'll say caused the RSI....

Anyhoo... keep stum, say only what you need to, seek legal advice straight away and good luck... it also goes without saying that you need to stop 'chatting' on an open forum about the whole thing... as some saddo may pass information on to your employer!

Good luck, DCI
I know we don't see eye to eye, but that's all very good advice from DCI.

You don't mention what exactly has caused your RSI. Has the specialist identified the particular movement or operation that you do at work that it causing/aggravating it?

Have you been asked to discuss it with the company? If you have, follow DCI's advice and make sure you have someone with you.

As far as I am aware, the company cannot increase your hours from 40 to 60. Unless overtime is specifically detailed in your contract of employment, it is by mutual agreement. But then again, your union should take care of this too.

I saw the drawings you did for someone and they are good enough to be professional. Have you thought about developing that? Is it only cars, or do you do animals and people as well? The kind of stuff I saw could earn you good money.

Do some searches, see what others are offering and if you can, find out how much they charge. There's nothing quite like working for yourself doing something you really enjoy!

Go and talk to people at your local art college. Tell them what you'd like to do with your life and don't be shy about taking some samples of your work along. They will probably offer constructive critiques of your work, your techniques and so on, but if you enjoy your drawing as much as you say, you'll accept these and work on them.

Then it will be about finding commissions. SN has to be the starting point, but your own website is easy to set up, only costs a few quid and I'm sure there are folk on SN who'd offer advice and help in this respect.

Visiting car shows with your work, doing limited editions and so on - there's lots of way you could go with this.

And it need not be your only job. You could make a decision to join an agency like Kelly Services or Manpower and do a few shifts a week here and there for their clients so you split your effort with some regular income from working and top up with money from your art.

I've seen people go through industrial litigation. It can be very consuming. You feel angry, put upon and generally hacked off that someone with power and money can so seriously impact your life and that of your family when all you ever wanted to do was do a good job, be shown a bit of respect and get paid.

The whole scenario can gnaw away at you so although it is very, very hard, please try to keep some perspective. You WILL get through it with help from friends and family - and hopefully the union - so try to see beyond it all, stay healthy where you can, don't take it out on your wife, keep cheerful and don't let the barstewards grind you down.

Good luck - I really do wish you well.

thanks for that nooooby, a heart felt and welcome comment with useful advice.

my main problem with regards my commission stuff is the time it takes to do one in comparision with how much i charge. as you would agree, i have to be cheap to entice custom, and at the moment, i cant make a living from it.

with regards to my rsi, its the nature of the job and the companies refusal to recognise my complaints and symptoms and do something about it. ie too much pressure to hit targets, which has resulted in this for me and others too.

again, thankyou for the advice... hopefully the custom i have on here waiting will help me financially and i may open a few doors this way.
