OK, this has been a long time in the making but here we go!!!

This all started last year... I have been itching to get on with my 22B project, but the funds simply haven't been there!!!

So over the past 6 months I have been saving like a bugger!!! The aim for my car since the start of my project has been to get the car back to an excellent condition inside and out and to get the engine past the 400 BHP barrier. So after loads of emails, forum posts and advice from the top Subaru tuners, I made my wish list and have been slowly crossing the items off one by one.

So, 3 weeks ago the car entered my local Subaru garage with one thing in mind... 400 BHP!!!

It is amazing how much the little bits and bobs here and there add up to!!! I think I am near the £700 mark, just by buying fittings and crappy bits of silicone hose, most of which you will probably never see!!!

So where do we start??? Lets start with the wish list!!!

Lateral Performance MD321T
Lateral Performance 76mm Silicone Inlet Pipe
Uprated TMIC
Simtek ECU
Roger Clark Motorsport Oil Catch Can & Fitting Kit
Carl Davey Billet Aluminium Fuel Rails (parallel fuel rail conversion)
Nismo 740cc Flow Matched Injectors
Fuelab Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator
Cold Air Induction Kit
Carl Davey Inlet & Header Tank Spacers
Zero Sports Cool Action II Intercooler Splitter

Soon parts off the list started arriving through the door...

Carl Davey Billet Aluminium Fuel Rails...

Carl Davey Insulating Inlet Manifold Spacers...

APS TMIC (£45 off eBay!!!)...

Fuelab Adjustable FPR...

It wasn't long before I walked into the workshop and found this happening...

Bits here...

Bits there...

Bits bloody everywhere!!!

You know what they say, sometimes you need to go backwards in life to go forwards!!! I now know what they mean...

Anyway, progress has been up and down. The low point has been the last couple of weeks and as I am the project manager, I sadly have no-one but myself to blame when things start to got **** up or we are missing stuff!!!

So last week quite a bit of progress was made...

Pre-Turbo fitting...

Then the MD321T got put on...

MD321T with new inlet pipe...

Carl Davey inlet manifold insulating spacers and gaskets...

RCM Crank Pulley to match my existing ones...

Zero Sports Intercooler Splitter...

Inlet manifold stripped down to basics...

Carl Davey Billet Aluminium Fuel Rails fitted...

RCM Oil Catch Tank...

Zero Sports Gauge Pod...

I had a phone call this morning to tell me the inlet manifold is now back on and some other work has been started, so I am off over there in the morning to take some more pics...

To be continued...

About time

Damn that's a lot of work and some quality parts used, that was a good find on e-bay Richy the APS TMIC what a saving !!

That will be like a work of art when it's all back together
You have a good local garage there to be able to take all of that on it's far from easy and takes a lot of time to get it assembled.

Spot on

Cheers for the comments Si, really appreciate your remarks.

Yep, my local Subaru garage is ace and after going there for the last 8 years I know them well enough to trust them with a project with this. Plus it breaks up the usual Subaru servicing for them so I think they enjoy it also.

As for the APS TMIC, it was a bargain!!! It is in perfect condition and was mis-typed on it's listing hence it went for no money!!! This TMIC has been proven on my mates 400 BHP P1, so I know it is up to the job in hand!!!

I am off over to see the 22B shortly, hopefully I can take some more pics and see some more good progress!!!

Wow thats quite a project you've got going there Richy, be great to see all the photos each step of the way. And as Si said you've got a great little bargain there with the top mount. You seem to have spent a bit of time researching looking at your comprehensive parts list. Be great to see the final results, hope to see you at a meet soon.
Taylor.

Nothing like opening up all them new boxes and getting that first peeps at the shiny stuff

It will look good on the car Richy, trust me

Good to here that your local scooby dealer is looking after you as well, everyone quite rightly has a moan when it all goes **** up but nothing wrong with singing a few praises when they get it right

Cheers Taylor for your comments.

I have spent a lot of time on researching the 'right' mods before I bought them. You know what they say, "Right first time" and that is the way I think about things in everyday life. I am not a person who has money to throw away, so I wanted to do this once and once only.

Kev as for Subaru dealers, credit is given where credit is due and my local Subaru dealer is the best little firm I have ever delt with. Polite, knowlegeable, reasonably priced, friendly and prompt. I couldn't ask for more...

Bloody APS TMIC didn't fit (well it would have fit if I was willing to modify the intercooler and loose the strut brace, which I wasn't)!!!

So it's now on eBay from 10pm - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MESC:IT&ih=006

I've done this once already on my last Scooby... I would have to loose the standard STi carbon fibre strut brace which I don't want to do.

I am thinking of having Pace or Forge motorsport make me a custom one up, but obviously it won't be ready for Andy F's remap in time...

Maybe I will have to have a map tweak in the future...

You may be better delaying the map until your ready..... now that is me giving you the voice of reason

I agree completely about not loosing the strut brace

Custom jobbie that's interesting

Sadly Si, too much has been done and sacrificed to not do this remap next week... It needs doing, so I will get it done...

Next time Andy F comes down to you boys, I will pop down for a map tweak...

Rich,
I'm in discussion with Andy F now about him coming down. He's fully booked till 8th May. We have offered to travel if he gets a booking mid country,
but looks like it could be possible to organise one down here in May. I have'nt bothered putting a post on as there is already one arranged with JGM so I figured I'd have hard work trying to fill a group buy. At the moment myself and my mate are having one & Andy said that someone down here has contacted him, so if there is interest I will start a group buy thread as we only need about 6 to make it worth while for Andy.
Anyway if it's of interest to Rich or anyone, drop me a line. If not I'll carry on with just the 2 of us.

Yep May would be fine for me, it would give me enough time to save for a tidy TMIC and be ready for a map tweak...

Did you say there was an 'Andy F Remap' post already running in the Wales section???

I'm gutted Kev if I'm honest... Wish I had tried fitting it earlier, but there ya go no point crying over spilt milk...

The problem it has left me with, is the fact that the standard V4 STi TMIC is only really good for 350 BHP... I am looking at a V7-9 STi TMIC upgrade now as the quickest and cheapest option.

I did this upgrade on my previous Impreza, so I know the mods I need to do in order to get it to fit.

Watch this space...

Good man, don't let it beat you, sounds like you've got it under control. As Kev said gutting, especially with the timing as Andy's mapping it soon.

Richy, Just curious here have you ruled out FMIC completely is it because you don't want to cut the car ? I must admit having seen Kev's APS one is quality and it fits through the wing without any cutting by the look of it via a silicon pipe then passenger side goes under the engine and up from behind so to speak I know it's far from cheap but it is very impressive.

It was interesting to talk with Type-r Pete yesterday as he is also running the APS front and after Pete looked at Kev's he was impressed with the way the manifold spaces lifted the manifold up giving more clearance for the silicon hose to fit under by the induction pipework.... it's mod that Pete is now going to carry out on his.

I'l be first to admit the APS is not budget friendly but it's a world apart when you have a good look at it's set up under the bonnet etc.

The FMIC route has been ruled out because of the 22B front bumper. No way on earth am I cutting it!!! I know I can get a replica front bumper put on the car, but hey who wants a replica???

I am a funny b*stard when it comes to the 22B and I want to be different, therefore I want a setup different to that on the market.

Wait and see what I come up with, I have ruled out 400 BHP on the visit to Andy F's this Friday now, so the pressure is off me somewhat.

I will put something together for the next time...

Good point if you were ever to decide to cut the bumper I think the best option would be to buy a replica one and cut that keeping the original in the attic.

We will be watching

You could always go down the Lateral FMIC route, does not require any cutting as I know. The downside....it's not cheap and you would need to reverse the inlet manifold from memory.

Cheers for the comments/suggestions guys...

Unfortunately, money is the big issue now and the main reason because there isn't any left!!!

I'm going to see what is achieved on Friday and I will go from there with the 22B. At the moment it looks like I will probably end up with a V7-9 STi TMIC, which Andy F says will handle 450 BHP.

Does anyone know what strut brace will fit with this type of conversion on a MY98 (phase 1.5) inlet manifold??? One thing I don't want to do is loose the front strut brace...

Si

John, Big brakes had this set up, its impressive to say the least

Richy, I can understand you not wanting to chop a 22B bumper so it looks like the V7-9 top mount is the best option for now.

LOL, at £5.5K would you blame me for not wanting to cut the bumper!!!

If I was ever to go front mount route I would save my pennies and buy the Lateral Performance Rad/FMIC Combi... It's just a matter of saving the pennies. BTW, you don't have to have a reverse inlet for this mod as I have seen it done with the manifold in standard position... However, I probably would reverse the inlet if I was going to do this...

I am trying something out with regard to the standard V4 STi intercooler, I'm not sure if it will help but it is worth a try...

sorry to break into your thread rich, but what the prob with the aps tmic, would it fit my my93 wrx? my strut brace goes around the front of the inlet manifold. saw it on ebay has it got any y pipes/alloy flanges?
cheers phil.
btw i wouldn't wanna be cutting up such a lovely car, if it were me i'd save for a custom built tmic, people like allysport etc specialize in stuff like that.

Phil,

TBH I really don't know if it would fit your WRX. The main issues I had was the fact I would have to remove the strut brace and the idle control valve was catching the 25mm dump valve adaptor. This would have meant the flange at the front needed a very thin blanking plate (or welding up) and a new dump valve port would have had to been welded onto the intercooler.

IMHO, this was too much work and money to spend on something that still couldn't promise me 450 BHP. As for the alloy Y piece this never came with one. I was going to use the old one off my 22B TMIC.

Hope that helps,

Richy

OK, the 22B is back home and pi$$ing off the old biddy over the road already!!!

I am gonna give it a clean up tomorrow and then I will take some pics...

Still got some mounting brackets to be made and a couple of other things to be done, but it looks the part already...

It has got a couple of minor issues at the moment, but I'm hoping Andy F is going to let me know the error of my ways...
