Subaru DIESEL!!!

The "I'm having too much fun argument" won't work for much longer. I believe in some parts of the country superunleaded has already reached the £1.20/litre price I predicted a couple of months ago. Now we are all used to to £1+ litre there is very little to stop the price continuing to rise. The fun that people talk about is going to get so expensive that the money would be better spent somewhere else.
You're also going to have to start thinking about the residual value of your gas guzzler because the second hand market is going to dry up. How many people come on this site and say they have 5-10 grand to spend on a scooby? Loads is the answer. How many of these will be able to afford the petrol if they can only just afford the car. If they use their car as anything other than a weekend play thing then the cost of running it will far exceed the purchase price. Do yourselves a favour and make the switch now.

My Plan (at the mo) is to keep the Scoob in its current state of tune for another year, and then buy a clean green car for my commute into London each day as i think the green criteria for this low emmision zone is only going to get tougher,
A year ago it was about the same annual cost to use the train/tube now the car is 25% more, not good true but the train does not get me to work early enough and takes 45 mins longer on both legs of my journey, so i'm kinda screwed there
FWIW i think crude could trade as high as $115 a barrel, the only silver lining to this cloud is that there are signs that the American demand is subsiding somewhat as this credit crisi bites, the Chinese may have to control their raging inflation in 2008 also curbing demand, lets hope these 2 huge oil fields off Brazil do provide the Light sweet crude the Americans use so much of

With increasing petrol prices and the "having too much fun to change" argument, the only way to have a high performance petrol care is to have one just for weekends. Having a more economical run about for the daily commute to work & back.
Unless you earn enough not worry about it. Even then just because you can afford to, doesn't mean you enjoy paying soo much for petrol.

There's something to be said for having two different cars so you can still appreciate the scooby, though. I got bored of my MY00 after 4 years of driving it everywhere, so now I have an STI 2 which is noisy, thirsty and uncomfortable - quite unsuitable as an everyday car but great fun - plus a diesel BMW to commute in. It's a combination that works very well, and since the scooby always feels fast and raw after driving the BMW I don't feel the need to keep tuning it. So it saves me money

My plan currently is, buy a Focus RS next year. Sell the Scoob and buy a cheap'ish runabout to get to work & back. Thinking upto £4k for either a little Fiesta Zetec or a Golf TDI.
I've factored that with such low miles on the Focus, I won't need new tyres on it every year. Brake pads should last years. Ditto Brake disc's etc. Plus the savings in 20mpg running costs on a daily basis.
Take the initial £4k buying price of the second car, the 35+mpg, low tax, cheap tyres, pads, disc compared to the Focus will mean running cost of 2 cars should be cheaper than running the RS daily.
Plus going on the second hand prices of mint Escort Cosworths the RS should hold it's value very well. Only if AWD and built in limited numbers.
I'd plan on keeping the RS for 5-10 years for the weekend plaything only.
Depreciation on a second hand £4k car should be minimal, and I'd change it every other year for about the same £4K

stilover, you seem to be personally responsible for the year on year increase in new car sales. What have you had in the last 2 years? M3, STI, Cayenne Turbo, another scoob, now an RS Focus and runabout....and I am sure there are more.

No. Had my Scoob now for 3 years this May.
You've got me confused with someone else.
