An impreza (244g/km) bought in 2008 will have a G band because greater than 225 and the tax will be £400.
In 2009 this will then become an L band and go upto £415
If you have an Sti (257g/km) you will have a jump from £400 upto £440 because it will get placed in band M.
Any car bought in 2009, will have the A-M coding structure to begin with but will have a bigger 1st year tax.
Thats the way i read that chart anyway

It makes it a bit of a mockery really when my 2.5 Di-D 4x4 double-cab pick-up (2006) only costs £120 a year to tax.
Had a look on my V5 and there's no CO2 figures, so it must be cheap because it's a Euro4 commercial vehicle.
But it's still a high polluting 4x4 that the Government really hate.
Doesn't make sense
I'm not complaining of course

I found this one.
VCAcarfueldata.org.uk - Database Search
It only seems to go from 2006 with scoobs though.

I think it's because current tax only applies to cars from 23rd March 2006 at present.

Bought 6 months tax last year to make sure I hit the £300 a year before the tax hike to £400 in April. 251 for me - Diesel shogun in the rural highlands. Somehow a toyota prius really wasn't going to hack it where I now live
****ing useless ****** **** tosser smarmy arsehole labour MP's. I believe one of the opposition quipped that Brown's ventriloquists skills were first rate. I bet Darling enjoyed having Brown's hand up his ****....

It does look that way.

Why we can't pay at the pump for what we use is beyond me. I do 1k miles a year which is less CO2 than someone in a focus doing 10k a year
It's all bollox, no other way to describe it

In a few years time, a lot of old petrol cars will cost as much to tax as they are worth. Loads will get scrapped and many more people will opt for diesels.
(loads of VAT from car sales there)
Will there be enough derv to keep the price steady(ish) or will the price of this shoot up as people switch?

A VW and BMW have done with great effect already!
Subaru are shocking in this respect and to spend some R&D Yen on making their engines less wasteful!

Diesel engines require significantly more thourough and frequent servicing than petrol engines. There is still the emission of PM10 particulates, rather than Co2, which are hugely poisonous to humans.

But who is actually going to buy a new scoob now anyway? They looked $hite in the photos, saw one for real for the first time the other day and just thought 'O my god' it looks about as appealing as a reliant robin. Ive had 3 scoobs but looking at them now, well the words plot and lost the come to mind.

Well, no actually. BMW just put diesel engines in their range and called it "Efficient Dynamics", that's BS IMO. VW have had diesel options for decades, but they're not as economoical as you think.

My 330D requires an oil and filter change after about every 18,000 miles, and a full service every 36,000 miles. Hardly 'frequent'.

Of course, the great unwashed who voted in these tossers probably don't bother paying road tax on their highly polluting old shed's anyway..
And by polluting I mean all the real pollutants, not Co2.....

Hear George Osborne last night? He is commited to Showroom tax (indeed the Tories proposed it in September 2007)
To be honest I don't think it matter who you vote in, in this regard, all three main parties are committed to targetting drivers of higher polluting cars.

So it looks like alot of people will be selling their current cars and going for older (pre-2001) cars to swerve the road tax hike.
Surely the older cars are more polluting than the modern ones?

Not necessarily, in terms of CO2 emissions anyway. But they certainly could be.
But basically you can't penalise someone for buying a car in, say, 1998, in 2008 - By that I mean that in 1998 you weren't armed with the knowledge that you were making a willing choice to pay a higher rate of road tax - hence 2001 cars are seperated into 1500 at a cheaper rate and over 1500 at the standard rate.
I suppose they get away with it for 2006 cars and after because at that point you have made a conscious decision to pay the higher rate.
