Paying twice the tax for the very same car, just becasue you bought it (in some cases) a day after the cut off point in March 2006?

Although it looks like the pre and post 2006 split will be no more.

I agree I think its pretty rotten to retrospectively penalise people - But the argument goes that if you bought a car in 2006, you knew you were going to be in whatever band, and that the fee for that band was going to change.

I don't know when the tax bands were brought in. As far as I know, they were in place in 2003, so "officially" you knew you car was being banded for road tax (even if, unsurprisingly, you didn't, if you see what i mean)

I have a question.

I have a 2002 sti in band F at present. VED due next month - £210. So, at my renewal in April 2009 I will have to pay over £400!

What happens if I only get 6 months tax this time. Tax will then due again in October. Can I then get 12 months tax in October for £210?

If I understand correctly, then yes, as the increase for you wont come in until April 09.

thats what I did this time round, to be able to get 12 months for £300, rather than £400

so my bug eye wrx reg'd in sometime march (i think .. i lost my papers) is gonna cost £400 to tax next year?
my car tax renewal is in front of me and thats doing my head in..

Surely this will have a massive knock on effect for car sales circa 2010/2011 as well with people being expected to pay an extra £1000 for any sort of performance car

I think this will be the death of performance cars now, as a few of us predicted in the many "smoking ban" threads of last year

It will be a £1k showroom tax and then they will slowly increase the annual tax to a point where its impossible for us normal folk to own anything but a watered down electric car.

I better re-think the sale of my 205/purchase of a Focus ST as it looks like only older performance cars will survive much past 2010.

I am a calm person but I feel proper hatred towards these bloody MP's messing about with our lives on some pretend "green" manifesto.

Let's face it, you would have to be mad to buy a brand new Impreza now, not only is it a pretty ugly car, the tax is going to be horrendous, petrol is at a record high and not coming down any time soon.

This is not going to be a sought after car and depreciation will be absolutely massive!

Sports car buyers are about to start getting clever, and this isn't looking like a clever car!

I went band F, selling Impreza and buying an S3 as Band G were for Climate Killers, now I find it goes up to £300 plus.

Changing the wife's car from a Golf Tdi to a nice efficient 207 GT, now that will be over £200!!

Whichever way you look at it we pay more, as normal family car owners, be interested to see normal cars that come in at a sensible price.

Actually, yes it is about diesel engines, as well as the items you mention too. If you spoke to a non-BMW diesel service engineer and asked their opinion, they'd tell you your diesel engine won't last long with service intervals of that length (Assuming oils and fuel, bio-diesel in particular, are not the same all over the world).

I buy my car based on the pleasure that I will get from it, its a hobby in part. An extra £1k over the 5 year life of the car = £4/week extra. Would I be prepared to pay that to enjoy an Impreza more than an Astra? Yes I would. (I already pay £400/year more in insurance and £ in extra fuel costs.)

Some people can afford to run a Porsche Cayenne. They are prepared to pay a massive amount more than I am to run a vehicle. You just get on the ladder where the cost benefit analysis says is the right level for you.

in saw this coming, which is why i decided to keep my classic that had started to rust on the rear arch lips (well it is 12 years old now ), and hack the arches off and fit a wide body kit over the top, i wont be getting another performance car after this one, so i figure i will keep the classic on the road as long as possible, and i simply can not drive a car around with rusty patches on the rear arches (i always sell them once they start to rust)

sucks ***** for the bug eye owners trying to sell, why pay for a bug eye that's going to be

1. slower and lardier then the classic
2. cost ****loads more to tax ?

To be fair, we're only talking a couple of hundred quid a year at most, hardly worth worrying about at the minute, but it may be an issue in 5-10 years time when they have increased it massively but by then they will have eradicated all performance cars

A month ago I was looking changing up for a new're wagon, there a couple of nice bugeyes on Snetters for sale page.
Think thats no longer going to be my option, more so because I feel were just being robbed as to contributing to a better enviroment.
Which leads me onto modern day diesels as a new option, also have a V40 diesel on 03 plate. But the new ones, (diesel engines) are getting better, and hate to say it but just look at the Vauxhall Astra 1.9. That has loads of potential for tweaking and getting 200bhp ish out of

Most diesels have a cataliser fitted, but not a filter. You still get PM10 particulate emissions.

So where would a 2003-2004 JDM STI fall into this then? I'm currently on the look out for a Scoob and would like a JDM model if I can find one, is it going to be in band G/£400+ ?
