I've looked at that table and read the page in the report, but I'm still not clear... will a 2005 STI (currently band F) be in band M next year? If so, that seems to defeat the whole point of band G (which was that you knew when buying the car that it was going to get taxed at a higher rate).

Looks like it applies to all cars registered after March 2001 so yes you will be in the high bracket depending on your emissions

here's an idea
if everyone in the country refused to pay car tax,what would the goverment do about it ????????
stick it on petrol duty???? ,as we need it to run our cars,thus balancing the cost of mr 60000 miles a year man compared to mr OAP nip to the shops once a week,why should mr rep mobile pay the same as mr OAP who probably does about 100 miles per month max ?????
yep people say that the higher milege driver pays more due to fuel duty,but does it really balace out the costs against bracketing of car tax ????
for one,i aint paying £750 a year to tax my sti,it aint happening,i will just diclare the car as sorn,and take my chances with a stop fine (no tax ??? £60 fine ?????)
i do not agree with uninsured/untaxed/un-mot'ed cars on our roads,but that figure is just pure theft and totally unjustified

It does seem ludicrous. Company car tax, isn't that based on how green the car is multiplied by how many miles you do? Surely any brain dead f***er can see the sense in taking the omissions and multiplying by the amount of miles you do. Fair enough if you have a top whack Impreza and do 30k a year more than likely on your own but the rest of us who do 6k and car share that doesn't seem fair. Goodnight Subaru Impreza.................

the table shows 2 differing categories of registration as pointed out above, enlarge at the bottom, cars registered before march 2006 come in at band f over 186 in category 2, cars after march 2006 will be taxed at the higher bands cat 3 band g and above. a 2001 bud should still be 210 pounds dont sell the new age just yet. anything over march 2006 may as well selli it unless you are minted.
edited to say though that only looks set till 2009, 2010 rates will put you in higher bands i think.

we need to get this government out!
i bought a '52 WRX knowing that the tax was £210, and it would fall into the group lower than the STI. Now they've just decided to re-shuffle all the groups so next year i get stung for £415 tax.
I'm only 26, and with the rate we're going, i'm worried that in 10 years time it will be impossible to own and run a performance car unless you're absolutely minted These kind of taxes are only going to get worse and they're going to cripple the market for cars like ours. I don't want to be forced to drive some diesel eco-tractor by this government when i'm in my thirties!

As I keep pointing out, it would make no difference whatsoever: all three parties have said that they will support/extend so-called 'green' taxes of this sort.
I agree that it seems a very unfair move - why bother with band G at all if it was only going to last two years? Typical lack of planning/forethought on the government's part.

As these taxes are on manufacturers emissions data I think it's likely that more and more detuned cars will appear on the market as new with manufacturers PPP style options available to up the power once the sale is done.
At the moment there's nothing to stop me tuning my 01 up to 500 bhp and not paying any extra tax.

Annoying if you have a bugeye WRX - it's registered after 2001, it is 242g, but the blobeye is 'only' 219g, making it a lower band. Next year it will be £115 cheaper to run a blob than a bug, the year after the gap widens even more.

Doom and gloom
I’m actually very relieved at the scale of the rise in vehicle excise duty and fuel duty (including the postponement). Some of the threads on this site were all doom and gloom. The end of the world as we know it – not just yet.

Whats the betting performance car manufacturers will just sell them new with very restrictive exhausts or detuned engines to get lower emissions, and all the owners will opt for the 'sports package' to be fitted the day after they buy it ?
Dont think it will have any great influence on emissions in reality - the dealers will just up the forecourt price by £1K and offer 'free 1st years tax' on new cars ( or will just give you £1000 less part ex on your old car ).
I cant really see that someone spending £30K - £50K on some big 4x4 for their wife to do the school run in is going to be particularly bothered about paying a few percent more.

This country is a bag of sh1te!! The US pay about 30p a litre and drive massive V8's everywhere, whereas we get shafted and are a substantionally smaller country!! Ar$e!!
