yes so they are in band f for over 185mg/k because they are pre 23/3/06, if your car is reg'd after 2006 but is less than 225 band f, after 2006 and over 225 band g, that any better mate starting to confuse myself

The band you are in is based on what the V5 document says.
Pre march 2001 there was no emisions test as part of the V5 producing process (Type Aproval), so they can't tax a pre march 2001 car on anything other than engine size, nothing else is recorded on the database. Hence the two bands for below 1549cc and above it.
Post march 2001 all European type aproved cars had to go through more stringent tests, one of which produced the CO2 emisions rate of the car (Noise is another you find on newer car V5 docs, guess what's coming next to clober you!)
JDM imports dont go through european type aproval, they go through the SVA test, which doesnt produce a CO2 report, so that isnt put on the V5 document, hence it's taxed as per the Pre March 2001 rules.
So if you want a newage car, dont buy a UK spec, buy a JDM spec and check the V5 document has it listed as PLG only.
Another nail in the coffin of the UK dealer network and UK spec car owners. JDM's have just gone up in value in comparison to a UK spec car. oops.

Not strictly true John as most pre 2006 cars which are imported are given a co reading for the SVA which is recorded on the V5 for example my Spec C has been given a co of 325 which is probably wrong anyway.I will get an accurate reading at MOT time and get the DVLA to alter it on my V5 but it wont make the tax any cheaper as everything changes in 2009

so dose that mean that my 22b,s are best left unregd then,if I keep them long enough and I had to tax them it would cost me more than they were worthbut they are both 98 cars so how much will that be

Notice one thing from this thread though - plenty of people complaining about having to shell out more, but none saying they are going to sell their Impreza and buy a 1.0 Corsa.
If you look at the figures for most of the cars, we're talking about an extra £2 or £3 a week at most - how many of us will happily pay that to be able to drive a decent car rather than being stuck in some dog slow little shopping trolley ?

Good information. Thankfully my JDM Bug Eye STI is registered as October 2000 dodging most of the new increases.

OK, I wouldnt be happy as such, but if someone said your choice was to pay £3 a week extra and drive an Impreza, or save £3 and drive something much slower and with a tiny engine, I think I wouldnt begrudge paying the extra.

STi 2008
Check This Out
BBC NEWS | Special Reports | 629 | 629 | New car tax rates for 2009
New STi is 243 g/km putting in band L
Year 1 tax of £750 and £430 thereafter.
So an extra £315 on a £25k car.
I resent paying the tax as it does not get used to improve the environment. Likewise fuel duty.
If all the money collected gave us good condition roads and an integrated transport network, I would 'almost' be happy.

Think what people haven't realised yet though, is the showroom Tax, say £950 is on top of the £455 Tax you are paying to put the car on the road. So if you buy a car in the top bracket, total tax for year 1 is £1405.
A new STI would be £1180 Tax just to get it out of the showroom.

I cant see how you could get the DVLA to change the CO2 band on your car either, as an MOT doesnt tell you that, it just has the levels of hydrocarbons etc with a pass or fail level.
The key thing is to see what the tax banding of the car you are interested in buying is, it will say PLG and a cc size, or it will say a CO2 level on the V5. If it has the cc and PLG, you will pay the earlier banded rates irespective of how old the car is.

Diesel is far worse from a health angle, it has far more dangerous emisions than a petrol engine, plenty of which are carconagenic. Using CO2 as a basis is crazy, as the more eficient the burn of an engine, the more CO2 is produced. It's easy to produce a low eficiency engine that has a great CO2 rating.
Look at the latest Porshe Turbo for example, that has a high CO2 rating, but the air coming out of the exhaust is actually cleaner than the air it ingests, CO2 and polution are completely diferent things and the government/media are deliberately mixing the two up so people are confused, high CO2 cars are not poluters, they are highly eficient on that front compared to a Diesel.

****. i posted up on the other thread that i was surprised tax wasn't worked out on co2 across the board instead of this pre march 2006 thing, then bugger me it happens
looks like the band g thing was only brought in so the jump didn't look as big as it is. doesn't look bad for the current guys in band g, but FFS it's over double the price for me next year how the **** is that fair??!!
darling you are one bushy browed, money grabbing c*nt and i hope you get run over by a subaru

Interestingly, this will actually have a positive effect on the second hand market for all pre registered 23/03/06 cars due to the massive differential on the +225 (g/km) Co2 band which is £210 vs £400 per annum..
