1. Erm, possible mechanical Failure (puncture), Wet Road, 4x4 in the way who froze in panic (did not perform an emergency stop where available distance to stop was ample). Plus human error (ran out of talent). And if travelling 30mph in a 60mph limit is excessive, them I'm guilty y'honour

2. Duff Brakes + Human error - Not paying attention and EBC pads don't work when cold. Hello Audi, nice boot you have there 25mph heavy traffic in a 40mph limit hardly excessive!

(Just annoys me even more - if I was going fast, at least I'd have a credible excuse )

Oh, I've also hit a few trees whilst and got stuck in a lake/pond/floodwater a few times. Not all totally intended (well, with exception of all the saplings that were in the way). Don't think off roading counts though - does it?

So what we've established from this is only one of the accidents so far have been due to speed over the posted speed limit?

Why am I not shocked that there arn't loads of accidents were the cause has been speeding, and far more are simply down to a lack of attention?

I guess you can't make cameras to catch attention lapses though...

Human error some bellsniffer just rammed right into the side of me from a side road as I was happily chugging past.

I experienced a little bit of shameful road rage after said incident as my fiance has long term neck problems which were exacerbated by this idiots driving.

I was doing less than 30 as I had just pulled onto this road and this idiot cab driver just accelerated right into the rear wing of our car which sent us spinning as it was quite wet. My fiance wasn't hurt bad, but her neck was jolted quite badly which put her in a lot of pain. Thankfully I didn't end up in prison as I took my aggression on his POS car instead of him.

That was the first and only accident I have ever had thankfully and it completely reinforced my ideas that accidents are caused by stupidity not speed.

Some 109 year old French chap negociated a junction at 30 mph in deep snow and ran into the side of my 220 GTi.

Some tw@t in a BMW ran into the back of my Impreza - he was on the phone at the time. Caused £5000 worth of damage and dislodged vertebrae (again).

Some idiot (me) ran into the back of an LDV van at a busy junction.

The only two I have been involved in as far as a car is concerned were due to error caused by lack of attention when a woman drove into the back after I stopped at a road works lights and she was busy looking 90 degrees sideways talking to her passenger! The other one was when I had to stop on a motorway for heavy traffic and the bloke behind me was looking at a car on his left and did not realise I had stopped. Another rear end shunt!

I fell off every motor bike I had as a lad except my Vincent White Shadow nearly always due to trying to corner too fast! Was always able to pick 'em up and ride away though. No traffic around then though

Last one over here, a woman in a people carrier decided she was going to change lanes without checking to see if anyone was alongside her

Last actual one was in Thailand, a muppet on a scooter tear-arsing through slow moving rush hour traffic ran straight into the back of me. He hit me so hard that he went over the bars of his bike, and landed face down in the load bed of my pick-up

The one which made me smile was a biker who was telling me that he hit the back bumper very hard and his head went through the rear window of the car. He came to only to find that the little dog lying on the rear shelf was licking his face!

Had a few over the last 20 years or so.

Only was one my fault, around 1992 I think, not looking properly coming out of a junction (even today I still look twice after that)

Been about 3 or 4 others that I remember, either other drivers carelessness or being deliberately driven into.

None at all due to speed.

Last one was just a month ago. Fat old ****** in a Shogun decided he didn't want me to get in front of him, despite being two lanes merging into one.

Cut a long story short I think he decided to use size to cut me off, misjudging the fact that I was already passing him (with no effort).

He misjudged the cutting up manouver and simply just hit the side of me!

Going to be one of those where the insurance company may well decide on a fifty fifty!

Realising this at the time, I decided to give him my money's worth of abuse. Perhaps slightly questionable, but the stupid old git had it coming to him, anyone less charitable and not as nice as I am would have dragged him out of his tractor and kicked the **** out of him.

I know if one of my kids was hit on a road set at 30mph I would campaign until the sun went down to get the limit reduced as most people would, cars and pedestrians don't mix very well and there will only ever be one winner in those situation, why shouldn't we care for children in residential areas where they can be found, or do they not matter??
Why not teach the little tyke not to run in the road?

And while were at it, lets have an american law introduced "jaywalking" kids should only be able to cross at designated points on the road, not just run out whenever they want!

And if your a parent of a "latchkey" kid, and they get run over on the way home, you should be asking yourself serious questions about the way you bring up a child, not blaming the driver cos its easy!

Ooh forgot a few others:

Private hire Taxi rammed into the back of my poor little polo sending me spinning into oncomming traffic - driver error, not paying attention - didn't even brake (must have had a late shift the night before).

Some feejit "not very-English-man" pulled out of a side junction as I was passing - he went into the side of the car - driver error, not paying attention.

And some Ned in a Nova rear ended me, He was going too fast for teh conditions (wet road, 30 limit, school, parked cars etc), but the fact I was stationary indicating to turn right, brakes light on - you'd think he'd have noticed. Therfore not paying attention - driver error. He did have Nankang tyres on the front, which wouldn't have helped a single bit

Human error - all ??? of them!

Accident 1 was when I ran into the back of someone because I wasn't paying attention.

Accident 2 was when I ran into the back of somebody because I had just unexpectedly gobbed up a greenie into my hand as I coughed and I was looking at the slime rather than the road!

Accidents 3 to 8 inclusive were all cyclists in Oxford who hit me whilst I was stationary.

Accident 9 was an idiot in a Land Rover who thought he could pass me on the nearside verge whilst I was waiting for a tractor to turn into a field but he only got two wheels on the verge before sideswiping me.

Accident 10 was a hit and run who came out of a side turning whilst being chased by a police car! They did eventually stop him - it was one of the first helicopter chases in Oxford.

Accident 11 was when the wind blew a motorway sign onto the car in Scotland.

Accident 12 was an uninsured Somali who rear-ended the car whilst I was stationary in traffic in Birmingham.

Accident 13 was last month when an old duck scraped the rear offside corner whilst I was stationary and she thought there was enough room to get into her driveway on the other side of the road.

Yep - none involved speed.

Human error, obviously. Cars themelves, as they are inanimate objects, cannot "cause" anything unless they are used.....by people.

While I will admit have no idea of the statistics; I would suspect that the majority of accidents involving child pedestrians are a result of human error - on the part of the child for running out, and their parents not teaching them any road sense; and not the result of a vehicle traveling at excessive speed.

But of course, the "STOP, LOOK, LISTEN" campaign that was drummed into the generation many of us belong to, seems to have all but ceased; replaced by the deamonisation of drivers with the "SPEED KILLS" campaign.

Actually, running out in front of a 1.5 ton motor vehicle traveling at the signposted speed limit kills.

There should be a return to educational broadcasting as there was 20 - 30 years ago, something which is sadly lacking.
Rose tinted specs -

The education of my kids in the school i went to 25 years ago is FAR better today than when i was there and my kids have a FAR better road saftey awarness.

When i was a kid we used to play football beside the road all the time, stupid.

At the end of the day you can teach your kids all you like but there will come a time when they see a mate on the other side and wander over without thinking, thats life.

The cause was human error.
The effect of another's death was however, down to the speed I was doing

I had two last year in a space of 2 months.

23/04/2007
Driver Error (third party)I was traveling down a carrigeway doing 50/55mph when some chump thought he would pull straight out onto the road into the second lane without looking causing me to clip his rear side sending me onto the kerb, hitting a post launching me into rolling it twice before a van coming the other way hit my roof sending me into another roll. Write off as you can imagine. He admitted it at the time but changed his mind later. His LEFT HAND DRIVE double cabin Dodge Ram only had a scuff!! *******o!! Oh and he bribed the Petrol garage for there CCTV tape before the Police looked at it. ****!

12/06/2007
Second one. Again Driver Error (Third party). Was just pulling off after letting someone pull into there drive on a busy 40mph road. I was doing at least 6mph when a set of head lights come racing towards me on my side of the road. Some **** was over taking the car infront of him and didn't see me. He spanked the whole side of the car!! It later turned out that he was doing 75/80mph in a 40mph zone and if I didn't turn my wheels to the left in that split second he would have hit me head on!! After he became cocky with me he suffered a broken nose (he must have hit his face on his steering wheel officer). But he had the last laugh. It was his third accident in 6 months and all he got was to pay for a rehab driving school leason!! Some punishment.

Driver error (My fault) whilst reversing my Mums car into her drive. I thought the rain was full of oil of something as it was smeary. Reversed the old girls motor into her wall making a mess of the rear bumper (which I paid for out of my own money to replace). It turned out there was no oil type sustance in the rain at all. I forgot to put my glasses back on and couldn't see jack!! D'oh!

i guess i've been lucky in the car/works van, i've just fell off my motocross bike a few times, the last time, i was on hard compound tyres, and whilst trying to keep up with my 4 stroke mates, cornered hard across a tarmac parking area and subsequently tore my shoulder from it's socket with the bike spinning from under me, that was 3yrs ago, and i haven't rode since, still got the bike though....

I did have one accident that was partly down to speed - I hit a car in the rear as he was stood still, brake lights off, waiting to turn right but not indicating. If I had have been going slower I'd have avoided it. Still, it was within the speed limit so all is rosy (unlike the front of the beloved XR3).

Luckilly that was the only accident I've had and was over 20yrs ago. I honestly do not know anyone that has had a genuine accident caused by inappropriate speed; it is invariably humans making mistakes. I dont call stuff like that Naseem Hamed crash an 'accident' as it was avoidable voluntary behaviour (but doubt speed camera pratnerships would agree).

This has come from some of the very good posts made in the speed camera topic, i'd be interested to know...

Was your last car accident caused by excessive speed (ie breaking the speed limit) or human error (either you or the other person)?

Just copy/paste...

Human Error

1. Boro
2. GIAS (tractor)
3

Excessive Speed

1.

Oh, I forgot my friend's mother who reversed out her car port in her very large driveway and bashed the side of my yet again stationary car parked miles out of her way, so that's number 14. Gosh, I'm glad I have moved off 13 - that's a darned unlucky number!

Human Error - Not me but the Mrs got hit by a plonker who couldn't be ar$ed to defrost his windscreen. He was peering through a tiny defrosted hole and BANG drove into the Mrs's car. £1500 damage, luckly loads of witnesses were there who could collaborate the Mrs's story and the state of his windscreen to the police.
