On the start menu find where it says network and right mouse click on it and choose properties. In that window it opens you see a heading called sharing and discovery with a number of buttons lit or not lit up underneath that heading with a drop down arrow across on the right next to each one. So if the button is not lit green on printer sharing and says off press on the drop down arrow and select to turn on. The below is what you should be seeing:

I had a nightmare with file sharing between Vista and XP. Had to disable all security to get it to work. It worked eventually, and I had to make sure that on both PCs, there was my user account name with the same password and it worked OK.
Same story now both are Vista. I also tried file sharing with Ubuntu, and that was even more trouble.

Not sure what you lot are doing, but all you have to do is enable file / printer sharing / network discovery and it should all just work. I quite happily share data between XP and Vista (32 AND 64) without any fiddling around with user names or passwords.
Not tried it with Ubuntu, but I refuse to install that nasty piece of software to try

I have never encountered problems and I have set up workgroups/domains with XP & Vista successfully. Vista has walk throughs for file sharing, and like XP you have to have accounts with passwords etc.
What i would do is check firewall settings in security centre, and systematically go through each one. You may have allowed a program to use a specific port, this does happen especially if you use Limewire/BitTorrent etc.
Another fault could be with your router firewall. I would try a crossover cable to link the 2 pcs together first, if each can see eachother then you need to look at your router.
It sounds a lot but believe me its simple.

Being an IT professional of 15 years (MSCE, MCSA etc) I had the opportunity fairly early on to take on Vista. I hated then and I hate it now. I've used it on old equipment and brand new equipment of a very high spec. It's never once worked properly any time I have used it.
You can't beat a fully updated install of XP for its functionality and ease of use. Alot of the stuff on Vista is just cosmetic and visually pleasing. Some hardware I have doesn't work
Industry is still ordering XP, the take up of Vista has been extremely slow.
I've no doubt that MS will force the issue and stop supplying XP and stop supporting it in order to force people to switch to Vista.
I'll be using XP for as long as i possibly can.
